Chapter 99 - THE TRUTH

The investigation lasted six months.
The files were handed to federal investigators.
The hidden accounts were frozen.
The people who had been manipulated by The Circle were offered protection.
Some went to court.
Some disappeared from public life.
Some finally told their families the truth.
Richard was arrested.
So were several former administrators.
Victoria testified.
Mara testified.
Eleanor testified.
My father survived.
Barely.
When he woke, the first thing he asked was:
“Did you find your mother?”
I held her letter.
“Yes.”
He closed his eyes.
“I wish I had been brave enough.”
“So do I.”
He nodded.
“I don't expect forgiveness.”
“You shouldn't.”
“I know.”
But I stayed.
Not because everything was forgiven.
Because I was finally done letting his mistakes control my life.
Julian changed too.
He left the law firm.
He began working with the foundation.
He attended every one of Noah's school events.
Every soccer game.
Every parent conference.
Every birthday.
He never missed one.
One evening, Noah asked him:
“Dad?”
“Yes?”
“Are you still going to marry Victoria?”
Julian almost choked on his coffee.
“No.”
Noah nodded.
“Good.”
Julian laughed.
“Why?”
“Because Mom doesn't like her.”
I nearly dropped my glass.
Julian looked at me.
For the first time in years, we both laughed.
Not because our past was funny.
Because it finally belonged to the past.
Later that night, Noah fell asleep on the couch.
Julian carried him upstairs.
I stood in the hallway.
Watching them.
The man who had once humiliated me.
The boy who had once watched his father leave.
Now walking upstairs together.
Something inside me finally became quiet.
Then my phone vibrated.
One new message.
UNKNOWN NUMBER.
I opened it.
There was only one sentence.
YOUR MOTHER'S STORY IS NOT OVER.
I stared at the screen.
Then another message appeared.
ASK ELEANOR ABOUT THE SECOND DAUGHTER.
My heart stopped.
Second daughter?
My mother had only ever had me.
At least, that's what I believed.
I looked toward Eleanor's room.
The door was closed.
May you like
I walked toward it.
And knocked.
