Chapter 36 - THE ATTACK

We barely reached the safe house before the windows shattered.
Julian pulled Noah to the floor.
Glass exploded across the room.
“Stay down!”
Another shot.
Then another.
The lights went out.
I held Noah against me.
Footsteps approached outside.
Julian reached for his phone.
“No signal.”
A shadow appeared behind the glass.
Then disappeared.
Minutes passed.
Nothing.
Finally, police arrived.
The attackers were gone.
But on the front door was a message.
ONE NIGHT. ONE BOY. ONE TRUST.
Noah looked at it.
“Mom?”
I covered his eyes.
Julian stared at the message.
“This is escalating.”
“No.”
I looked at him.
“It already escalated.”
I picked up the photograph of my grandfather.
“We need to find him.”
“How?”
I remembered the call.
His words.
You're still protecting her.
That wasn't random.
My grandfather had used a phrase when I was a child.
Whenever he wanted me to find him, he said:
“Look where the river remembers.”
Julian immediately understood.
“The old river warehouse.”
We left before sunrise.
But someone had already been waiting.
A black car was parked across the street.
Inside it was my mother.
May you like
And beside her was a man.
My grandfather.
