Chapter 12 - THE HOUSE WE LOST

I went to the old house before sunrise.
I didn't tell my father.
I didn't tell Richard.
I didn't tell my mother.
And I definitely didn't tell Noah.
I drove alone.
The house looked smaller than I remembered.
For twelve years, it had been my home.
My first Christmas with Julian.
Noah's first steps.
His first birthday.
The night Julian proposed.
The night he told me he loved me.
And the night he packed a suitcase and walked away.
Now it belonged to someone else.
Or at least, I thought it did.
The front door was unlocked.
I stepped inside.
Everything was different.
New furniture.
New paint.
But the staircase was the same.
I climbed to our old bedroom.
The closet had been remodeled.
I searched beneath the floorboard where Julian had once hidden his emergency documents.
Nothing.
Then I noticed something.
A loose piece of molding beside the wall.
I pulled it away.
A tiny metal box was hidden behind it.
My hands shook.
The key fit.
Inside was my wedding ring.
The original.
I picked it up.
It looked exactly like the ring Julian had given me.
But the inside contained a tiny inscription I had never noticed.
N.V.
Noah Vance.
I turned it over.
There was a tiny compartment.
I used the key.
It opened.
Inside was a micro-SD card.
I stared at it.
Then my phone rang.
My mother's number.
I answered.
"Mom?"
Silence.
Then a man's voice.
"Hello, Claire."
Julian.
My blood ran cold.
"Where is my mother?"
"She's fine."
"Let me speak to her."
"You'll see her soon."
"What do you want?"
"You already have it."
I looked at the SD card.
"The card?"
"Yes."
"What is on it?"
"Something your father spent six years trying to destroy."
I clenched my fist.
"You won't hurt my mother."
"That depends on you."
"What do you want?"
"Bring the card to the old courthouse."
"When?"
"Tonight."
"Why?"
"Because I want to finish what we started."
I laughed bitterly.
"You started this when you cheated on me."
"No."
His voice changed.
"The affair started before that."
I froze.
"What?"
"You think Victoria was the beginning."
A pause.
"She wasn't."
Then he hung up.
I stood in the empty bedroom.
The silence felt enormous.
I inserted the card into my phone.
There was one file.
A video.
I pressed play.
My father's face appeared.
He looked younger.
Angrier.
He was sitting in an office.
Across from him was Julian.
And beside Julian...
Victoria.
My heart stopped.
The recording began.
My father said:
"Once Claire signs the divorce papers, the trust becomes vulnerable."
Julian nodded.
Victoria asked:
"And Noah?"
My father's face hardened.
"He's the beneficiary."
Victoria looked at Julian.
"Then we need him to trust us."
Julian answered:
"I can handle that."
I stopped the video.
My hands were shaking.
This wasn't just betrayal.
They had planned my divorce.
They had planned my son's future.
They had planned everything.
But then I noticed something.
The video continued automatically.
A fourth person entered the room.
I recognized him immediately.
Grant Hale.
He placed a folder on the table.
Then he said:
"There's one problem."
My father asked:
"What?"
Grant looked directly at the camera.
"Claire already knows."
The screen went black.
I stared at it.
Claire already knows.
But I hadn't known anything.
Which meant someone had lied.
Someone had been feeding them information about me.
Someone close to me.
Then I heard footsteps downstairs.
I froze.
Someone was inside the house.
I slipped the SD card into my pocket.
The footsteps came closer.
I grabbed the nearest object I could find.
A man appeared in the doorway.
It wasn't Julian.
It wasn't Richard.
It wasn't my father.
It was Victoria.
She looked terrified.
"Claire."
I lowered the object.
"What are you doing here?"
She closed the door behind her.
"I came to warn you."
"About what?"
She looked at the SD card in my hand.
Then whispered:
May you like
"Your father is lying."
