Chapter 52 - THE CONFESSION

I stared at my grandfather.

“You ordered Dad to disappear?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“To keep him alive.”

“You keep saying that.”

“I know.”

“And every time, someone else pays the price.”

He didn't defend himself.

“You're right.”

Julian stepped forward.

“Who were you protecting Michael from?”

My grandfather sat down.

“Your father's investigation uncovered a network.”

“What kind?”

“Money laundering. Blackmail. Political influence. Corporate fraud.”

I frowned.

“And the Vance family was involved?”

“Some members.”

“Who else?”

“People more powerful than our family.”

I felt uneasy.

“Names.”

My grandfather looked at me.

“I don't have them all.”

“Then Account 909 does?”

“Yes.”

“Why didn't you destroy it?”

“Because I couldn't.”

“Why?”

“Because it wasn't mine.”

I didn't understand.

“Whose was it?”

He whispered:

“Michael's.”

My father had spent years collecting evidence.

Then why had he disappeared?

My grandfather answered before I could ask.

“Because when Michael discovered who was behind the network, he realized they already knew about him.”

“Who?”

My grandfather looked directly at me.

“Your father found out that one of the people controlling the network was someone he trusted.”

I froze.

“Who?”

My grandfather didn't answer.

Then the lights went out.

A second later, the security alarm screamed.

Julian pulled me toward him.

“Someone's here.”
