Chapter 91 - THE FILE WITH MY NAME

The room beneath the old church was silent.
Too silent.
Thousands of files surrounded us.
Every shelf carried a name.
Every name carried a secret.
And somehow, after everything I had survived, the most frightening file was the one sitting directly in front of me.
My name was written across it.
EMILY REED.
I stared at it.
“No.”
Richard Vance smiled.
“You should open it.”
Julian stepped between us.
“Don't.”
Richard's eyes moved toward him.
“You're still trying to protect her.”
Julian didn't move.
“Yes.”
Richard laughed softly.
“That instinct is exactly why you lost her the first time.”
Julian's jaw tightened.
I reached for the file.
“Emily,” he whispered.
I opened it.
The first page contained my birth certificate.
The second contained photographs of my mother while she was pregnant.
The third contained hospital records.
Then I reached the fourth page.
My hands froze.
There was a photograph of me as a newborn.
Beside the photograph was a handwritten note.
THE HEIR SURVIVED.
Below it was another sentence.
THE BOY MUST NEVER KNOW.
I looked at Noah.
He was standing beside me.
“Mom?”
I closed the file.
Richard watched me carefully.
“What boy?”
I looked at him.
“You tell me.”
He smiled.
“Not tonight.”
“Then why bring me here?”
“To show you what belongs to you.”
He pointed toward the shelves.
“The Circle collected information for generations.”
I looked around.
“You mean blackmail.”
“Yes.”
“Threats.”
“Yes.”
“People's private lives.”
“Yes.”
“And you call that an inheritance?”
Richard's smile disappeared.
“I call it leverage.”
I closed the file.
“I don't want it.”
“You already have it.”
Then every light in the room went out.
Noah grabbed my hand.
A red emergency light came on.
And somewhere above us, an alarm began screaming.
Richard looked toward the ceiling.
For the first time, he looked afraid.
“Someone has breached the vault.”
Julian turned toward the exit.
“Who?”
Richard whispered:
“The Circle.”
I stared at him.
“You said I destroyed it.”
“I was wrong.”
May you like
The door slammed shut.
And we heard footsteps approaching from the other side.
