Chapter 19 - THE LAST VANCE

The Hale estate was empty.

Or so it appeared.

The gates were open.

The house was dark.

We entered through the front door.

Noah stayed beside me.

Julian followed.

Victoria came behind us.

My mother refused to stay behind.

She wanted to see Grant.

We reached the main hall.

A light turned on.

Grant Hale appeared at the top of the staircase.

Alive.

Older than the photograph.

But unmistakable.

He looked at me.

"My daughter."

I couldn't speak.

He looked at Noah.

"My grandson."

Then Daniel stepped from behind him.

I almost stopped breathing.

He looked like Noah.

Not identical.

But close enough that my heart recognized him before my mind did.

The same eyes.

The same smile.

The same small birthmark behind his ear.

Noah stared at him.

"Are you my brother?"

Daniel nodded.

"Yes."

Noah stepped toward him.

Neither boy spoke.

Then Noah smiled.

Daniel smiled back.

And for one beautiful second, everything terrible disappeared.

Then a gunshot shattered the window.

Everyone ducked.

Grant pulled Daniel down.

Julian grabbed Noah.

Victoria screamed.

Another shot.

Then another.

My mother grabbed my arm.

"Richard."

But it wasn't Richard.

A man entered through the rear door.

My grandfather.

The man whose funeral I had attended.

The man who had supposedly died before I was born.

He was older now.

Much older.

But I knew him.

He looked at me.

"You were always supposed to be mine."

My blood ran cold.

Grant stepped forward.

"You don't own her."

My grandfather laughed.

"Everything you have belongs to me."

"No."

Grant shook his head.

"You lost."

My grandfather raised the gun.

Then Julian stepped between us.

"Enough."

My grandfather looked at him.

"You."

Julian's voice was steady.

"I know what you did."

"What did I do?"

"You killed Grant's father."

Silence.

"You killed the wrong man," Julian continued.

"You staged his death."

"You erased Claire's identity."

"You took Daniel."

"You manipulated Richard."

"And you used me."

My grandfather smiled.

"Yes."

Julian's face hardened.

"But you made one mistake."

"What?"

"You underestimated Claire."

My grandfather looked at me.

I pulled out my phone.

The recording from the wedding was still there.

The recording from Richard.

The hospital documents.

The trust documents.

Everything.

"I sent copies."

My grandfather's smile disappeared.

"To whom?"

"Everyone."

Police sirens sounded outside.

My grandfather looked toward the windows.

Then at me.

"You think this changes anything?"

I looked at Noah.

Then Daniel.

Then my mother.

"Yes."

He lowered the gun.

Police rushed through the doors.

Within seconds, he was on the floor.

Richard was arrested outside.

Grant surrendered voluntarily.

Victoria gave the police every recording she had.

Julian handed over every document.

For the first time in years...

Nobody was hiding.

Except one person.

My father.

I looked around.

He was gone.

---

Three days later, I found him sitting alone in a small church.

I sat beside him.

"You left."

He nodded.

"I had to."

"Why?"

"Because I helped them."

I looked at him.

"You didn't know everything."

"I knew enough."

He handed me an envelope.

Inside was a letter.

"My confession."

I looked at him.

"What will happen?"

"Whatever the law decides."

He nodded.

"I deserve that."

I wanted to hate him.

Part of me did.

But he had also protected Noah.

He had saved my mother.

He had finally told the truth.

I couldn't erase the damage.

But I could stop carrying it.

I stood.

"Goodbye, Dad."

He looked at me.

"You still call me Dad?"

I nodded.

"Because you raised me."

He cried.

"So did your mother."

I walked away.

May you like

For the first time in six years, I didn't look back.
