Chapter 41 - THE LETTER THAT CAME TOO LATE

Three months after Elliot Vance was arrested, life finally became quiet.
For the first time in years, I could sleep without checking the locks twice.
Noah returned to school.
My mother moved into a smaller house near us.
My grandfather began physical therapy and slowly recovered from the years he had spent hiding.
Julian kept his distance.
He never pressured me.
Never asked for another chance.
He simply showed up whenever Noah needed him.
One evening, I found an envelope beneath my front door.
There was no stamp.
No address.
Only my name.
EMILY.
I opened it.
Inside was a single page.
The handwriting belonged to my grandfather.
There is one thing I never told you.
My heart sank.
The trust was never created because I believed Noah would inherit the family fortune.
It was created because I knew someone would eventually try to kill him.
I stopped reading.
Then I continued.
The person who wanted Noah dead was not Elliot.
My hands began to shake.
The next line was worse.
Elliot was only following orders.
I looked toward Noah's bedroom.
He was asleep.
I ran to my grandfather's house.
He was sitting in his study.
I held up the letter.
“What is this?”
He looked at it.
Then closed his eyes.
“I hoped you would never find it.”
“Who gave Elliot his orders?”
He didn't answer.
“Grandpa.”
His voice became barely audible.
“Someone inside the family.”
“Who?”
He looked at me.
“Your father.”
I froze.
“My father is dead.”
“I know.”
“Then how?”
May you like
My grandfather whispered:
“That's what I need you to find out.”
