Chapter 64 - THE HIDDEN JOURNAL

We returned to the old estate.

My father remembered Elena keeping a journal.

“She never trusted computers,” he said.

“She wrote everything down.”

“Where?”

“In the nursery.”

The room had been abandoned for decades.

Dust covered the walls.

My grandfather found a loose floorboard.

Underneath was a metal box.

Inside was Elena's journal.

I opened it.

The first pages were ordinary.

Her pregnancy.

Her hopes.

Her fear.

Then the entries changed.

Eleanor knows about the baby.

Michael wants to fight.

I told him we can't.

Then:

If anything happens to me, Emily must never be given to Eleanor.

I turned the page.

The trust isn't the real secret.

I froze.

The next page had been torn out.

Julian noticed something.

“Look.”

A hidden compartment was inside the cover.

We opened it.

There was a memory card.

My father stared at it.

“I thought it was destroyed.”

“What's on it?”

“I don't know.”

Julian inserted it into a laptop.

A video appeared.

Elena sat in front of the camera.

She looked frightened.

“Michael, if you're watching this, I failed.”

My father covered his mouth.

Elena continued.

“Eleanor isn't the person you should fear.”

I stared at the screen.

“She has been working for someone else.”

My grandfather whispered:

“Who?”

The video continued.

“The person controlling everything is…”

The screen suddenly went black.

I looked at Julian.

“The file is corrupted.”

He checked it.

“No.”

He shook his head.

“Someone deliberately cut the ending.”

My father stared at the screen.

“I know who it was.”

“Who?”

May you like

He whispered:

“Your grandfather.”
