Chapter 32 - BENEATH THE OLD HOUSE

The old Vance estate was almost unrecognizable.

Trees had grown over the driveway.

The mansion was gone.

Only fragments of stone remained.

Noah had spent his earliest years here.

I remembered running through the garden.

My grandfather teaching me chess.

My mother calling me inside.

And Julian visiting before we were married.

We walked around the ruins.

Nothing.

Then Julian noticed something.

“Emily.”

He pointed toward the foundation.

There was a metal plate embedded in the concrete.

It had one word engraved on it.

HOME.

I knelt.

Underneath the plate was a keyhole.

The key from the first box fit perfectly.

A hidden section of concrete shifted.

A staircase appeared.

We descended.

At the bottom was a room.

And on the wall was a photograph of Noah.

Not as a baby.

Not as a toddler.

As he looked today.

I felt sick.

Someone had been watching him for years.

Julian found another photograph.

Then another.

School.

Birthday.

Park.

Even the hospital.

Every important moment of Noah's life had been documented.

“This isn't about the trust,” Julian whispered.

I looked at him.

“What is it about?”

He pointed at the newest photograph.

Noah was standing outside our house.

The date was yesterday.

Someone had been watching him until the moment he disappeared.

Then we heard a sound.

A child's voice came from the darkness.

“Mom?”

I turned.

“Noah?”

He stepped into the light.

Alive.

Safe.

May you like

And holding a piece of paper.

“Mom, Grandpa told me to give you this.”
