Chapter 65 - THE LIE MY GRANDFATHER TOLD

I turned toward my grandfather.

“You cut the video?”

He didn't deny it.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because Elena named someone who would have put you in greater danger.”

“Who?”

“I can't tell you.”

“You don't get to decide anymore.”

He looked at me.

“I made mistakes.”

“You've been making them my entire life.”

“I know.”

“Then tell me the truth.”

He closed his eyes.

“Elena named a man named Robert Kane.”

“Who is he?”

“A former business partner.”

“Where is he?”

“Dead.”

I stared.

“Of course.”

My grandfather shook his head.

“He died years before Elena disappeared.”

“Then why does it matter?”

“Because he wasn't alone.”

I felt the familiar cold return.

“Who worked with him?”

My grandfather looked at my father.

“Michael.”

My father shook his head.

“No.”

“You did.”

“I was investigating him.”

“You worked beside him.”

“To expose him.”

My grandfather continued.

“And you discovered that he had another partner.”

“Who?”

He looked at me.

“Your biological mother.”

Silence.

I couldn't move.

“My mother?”

“Elena wasn't innocent.”

My father immediately stepped forward.

“Don't listen to him.”

My grandfather looked at me.

“She was involved before she realized what they were doing.”

My heart shattered.

“No.”

My father shook his head.

“She was trying to escape.”

“That's what she told you.”

“She loved Emily.”

“She may have.”

“But she was part of the network.”

I looked at the journal.

Nothing made sense.

Then I noticed a sentence Elena had written.

I made one terrible mistake.
