Chapter 69 - THE PERSON SHE LOVED

I read the letter again.

Then again.

“Who?”

Eleanor smiled.

“You already know.”

“No.”

“Yes.”

She looked at my father.

I turned toward him.

“Dad?”

He shook his head.

“No.”

Eleanor laughed.

“Your father didn't betray Elena.”

“Then who?”

She pointed toward my grandfather.

My grandfather went pale.

I stared at him.

“You?”

He closed his eyes.

“Yes.”

My mother gasped.

My father stepped forward.

“What did you do?”

My grandfather whispered:

“I told Robert Kane where Elena was hiding.”

Silence.

“You betrayed her.”

“I thought I could control him.”

“You got her killed.”

“I didn't know.”

“You knew enough.”

My grandfather broke down.

“I was trying to save the family.”

My father shook his head.

“You sacrificed Elena.”

“I was wrong.”

I looked at him.

“You let my mother die.”

He couldn't meet my eyes.

“Yes.”

I felt something inside me break.

All the secrets.

All the lies.

All the years.

They had always led back to him.

But Eleanor suddenly laughed.

“You still don't know the worst part.”

I looked at her.

“What?”

“Your grandfather didn't betray Elena because of the trust.”

“Then why?”

She smiled.

“Because Elena had discovered who your grandfather really was.”

My blood went cold.

“Who?”

Eleanor looked at him.

May you like

“He wasn't protecting your family.”

“He was protecting himself.”
