Chapter 53 - THE BREAK-IN

Glass shattered downstairs.
My grandfather grabbed his cane.
Julian moved toward the hallway.
“Stay here.”
“No.”
“Emily—”
“I've spent my whole life being told to stay behind.”
I picked up a heavy lamp.
“Not anymore.”
Three men entered through the back door.
They wore masks.
One of them shouted:
“Where's the account?”
Julian stepped forward.
“You're too late.”
The man raised his weapon.
My grandfather shouted:
“Run!”
Julian knocked the weapon aside.
A struggle followed.
I pulled my mother toward the stairs.
Then Noah appeared.
“Mom!”
I froze.
He shouldn't have been there.
“Why aren't you in your room?”
“I heard the alarm.”
I ran toward him.
One of the masked men saw us.
He moved toward Noah.
I stepped between them.
“Don't touch my son.”
He grabbed my arm.
Then a gunshot echoed.
The man collapsed.
My father stood at the doorway.
Michael.
Alive.
Holding a gun.
“Get away from my daughter.”
Everyone froze.
My father lowered the weapon.
“Emily.”
I ran toward him.
“Where did you go?”
“To get this.”
He held up a small black envelope.
“Account 909.”
My grandfather stared.
“You found it.”
May you like
Michael nodded.
“And I know who they work for.”
