Chương 71 - Shadows on the Horizon

The golden autumn sunlight filtered through the tall oak trees surrounding the Vance estate, casting long, peaceful shadows across the manicured lawns. Inside the grand study, Damian Vance sat at his heavy mahogany desk, reviewing the latest quarterly reports for the Vance-Gomez Foundation. For over three years, the violent underworld of Chicago had remained a distant memory. The iron security gates still stood tall, but they now protected a sanctuary of education, healing, and family rather than a fortress of fear.

Marcus, now a recognized pioneer in artificial intelligence and a doctoral candidate at Stanford, was spending his autumn break back in Chicago. He stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, looking out at Eva and Lily playing chase with the golden retriever near the stone terrace. Eva’s laughter—clear, melodic, and completely free—was a daily reminder of how far they had all come from the suffocating silence of the past.

Yet, in the high-stakes world of global technology and corporate philanthropy, peace is often a fragile commodity.

Marcus’s phone buzzed sharply against the wooden surface of the desk. He glanced down at the screen, expecting a standard notification from the foundation's server nodes in Zurich. Instead, it was an encrypted ping from an unknown relay server routed through Eastern Europe.

He frowned, tapping the screen to open the encrypted payload. A single line of text appeared, glowing coldly against the dark background: "The king thinks the crown is safe, but the chess board is never empty. Watch your back in California, boy."

Marcus’s blood ran cold. He immediately brought the device over to Damian, sliding it across the mahogany wood. Damian read the message, his eyes narrowing instantly into lethal slits. The benevolent father vanished in a single heartbeat, replaced by the calculating, unyielding syndicate boss who had once ruled the Midwest.

"They think we're vulnerable because we went legitimate," Damian said quietly, his voice carrying a dangerous, frozen edge. "They think philanthropy makes us soft."

"It’s not corporate spies this time," Marcus said, gripping the edge of the desk. "This has the exact digital signature of the splinter cells we cleared out in the Balkans. Someone is trying to rebuild Viktorov's network from the ashes."

Damian stood up, walking slowly toward the window where the girls were still laughing in the sunlight. "Then we don't wait for them to make a move. We draw them out into the open."
