Chapter 10 - The Warehouse Strike

The midnight air along the Chicago riverfront was thick with industrial smog and the heavy scent of diesel fuel. Abandoned shipping containers rusted silently beneath the orange glow of sodium-vapor streetlights, casting long, eerie shadows across the cracked concrete of the dockyards.
Parked three blocks away inside a windowless command van, Marcus sat hunched over a bank of glowing monitors, his fingers flying across the keyboard with astonishing speed. The digital blueprint of Viktorov’s warehouse armory pulsed in vibrant neon blue across the center screen, displaying real-time thermal readings of every single guard inside the building.
"Movement in Sector B, Boss," Marcus whispered into his headset microphone, his voice remarkably steady despite the adrenaline pumping through his veins. "Two guards patrolling the loading dock catwalk. They're carrying automatic rifles, but their attention is split toward the front entrance. You have a blind spot along the western drainage pipe."
"Copy that, kid," my voice crackled back through his earpiece. "Moving in now."
Outside in the freezing chill, Viktor and I moved alongside a four-man tactical team, hugging the rusted corrugated steel walls of the warehouse. The air tasted of salt water and iron. I signaled with two fingers, and Viktor slid a silenced breaching charge onto the side service door.
Thud.
A muffled pop echoed through the alley, the heavy industrial lock disintegrating in a cloud of fine metal dust. We pushed through the opening in a synchronized rush, weapons raised, moving with the lethal grace of shadows.
Inside, the warehouse was a cavernous labyrinth of stacked wooden crates containing smuggled firearms, forged currency plates, and high-end electronics. Viktorov’s enforcers scrambled in confusion, shouting orders in Russian as our team moved through the aisles like a ghost storm. Flashbangs detonated with blinding white concussive flashes and deafening roars, dropping the enemy before they could even raise their weapons.
"Clear!" Viktor barked over the encrypted comms channel, his tactical rifle lowered as the last of Viktorov’s guards slumped unconscious against a stack of shipping crates.
"Awesome work," Marcus's voice chimed in through the headset, relief evident in his tone. But a second later, his tone flipped into sheer panic. "Wait! Boss, look at your secondary monitor feed! Viktorov isn't just storing weapons here—he's got a secondary data server linked directly to an offshore account in Zurich! They're initiating a remote data wipe right now!"
I cursed under my breath, sprinting toward the back office of the warehouse where a bank of heavy server towers hummed with blinking lights. If Viktorov wiped those servers, we would lose the financial trail needed to freeze his global syndicate assets permanently.
I kicked the office door off its hinges, diving across the room just as a hail of gunfire chewed through the drywall behind me. One of Viktorov’s elite bodyguards stepped out from behind a filing cabinet, a submachine gun leveled directly at my chest.
Before he could pull the trigger, a sharp, metallic clack echoed from the doorway.
Viktor stepped in behind me, his shotgun raised, firing a non-lethal beanbag round that caught the bodyguard squarely in the chest with the force of a freight train. The man flew backward, smashing through the glass partition and collapsing in a heap.
I didn't hesitate. I threw myself into the rolling executive chair, grabbing the keyboard of the master terminal. Lines of encrypted code scrolled rapidly across the screen as Viktorov’s automated deletion script counted down from ten seconds.
"Marcus!" I barked into my comms. "Can you override the remote wipe?"
"Give me three seconds!" Marcus shouted back from the distant van, his voice cracking with intense concentration.
On the screen, the countdown hit Three... Two... One...
Suddenly, the screen flashed bright green, and a bold banner appeared: FIREWALL BYPASSED. ROOT ACCESS GRANTED.
"Got it!" Marcus yelled triumphantly over the line. "I've locked Viktorov out of his own offshore accounts and downloaded the complete ledger of his Chicago operations directly to my secure tablet! You've got all his assets, Boss. Every single dollar."

I let out a long breath, leaning back in the chair as the adrenaline slowly began to recede from my veins. I looked around the smoke-filled, chaotic room, then tapped my headset.
"Good job, kid," I said quietly. "Pack up the gear. We're going home."
