Chapter 42 - Echoes from the Past

The heavy oak door of Damian Vance’s private study was cracked open, leaking a warm ribbon of light across the polished marble floor. Marcus pushed it gently aside. Damian sat behind his executive desk, reviewing legitimate real estate acquisition ledgers for the upcoming fiscal quarter, looking every bit the retired, dignified patriarch of a powerful corporate dynasty. When he saw the grim, tight expression on Marcus’s face, Damian immediately set his fountain pen aside and stood up.
"What is it, kid?" Damian asked, his voice dropping into the calm, authoritative register of a man who had weathered every storm the underground could conjure.
Marcus walked over to the desk, sliding his laptop forward to display the terminal logs. "We had a security breach on the foundation's Zurich server node ten minutes ago. Someone tried to scrape our foundational AI medical patents. I managed to isolate and sever the connection before they could download the core architecture, but they left a message."
Damian leaned over the screen, his dark eyes scanning the text payload. As he read the final line (“The past always finds its way home”), the temperature in the room seemed to plummet. The relaxed, benevolent father vanished in a single heartbeat, replaced instantly by the lethal, calculating syndicate boss who had once ruled the Midwest with an iron fist.
"That's not the signature of a standard tech hacker," Damian said quietly, his voice dangerously low. "That phrasing... it’s an exact psychological match to a syndicate faction we thought we liquidated in Eastern Europe three years ago. When Viktorov’s network collapsed, a splinter cell managed to slip across the Swiss border with millions in untraceable cryptocurrency."
"So they aren't just corporate spies," Marcus realized, gripping the edge of the mahogany desk. "They're organized crime syndicates using advanced cyber warfare as a weapon to destroy everything we've built."
"Precisely," Damian replied, walking over to the floor-to-ceiling windows to look out at the dark, rain-slicked gardens. "They know they can't breach our physical perimeter with guns and tactical vans anymore. So they're coming after our digital foundation, our philanthropic work, and your life's labor. They want to bankrupt the foundation, ruin our reputation, and force us out into the open."

Viktor stepped into the study at that moment, having monitored the internal security alarms from the ground-floor control room. His face was carved from stone, his massive hands resting near his tactical belt. "The digital perimeter is locked down tight, Boss. But if these operatives are utilizing Swiss banking fronts to fund their cyber operations, we need to strike at their financial root before they launch a coordinated secondary attack."
Marcus looked between Damian and Viktor, a fierce, unwavering resolve settling deep into his bones. He wasn't a helpless kid hiding in Chicago tenements anymore; he was a brilliant computer scientist and a vital part of the Vance family. "Give me twelve hours," Marcus said steadily. "If they're using Swiss servers to mask their traffic, I can reverse-engineer their encryption tunnel, trace their physical IP relay, and find out exactly where they're operating from."
