Chapter 36 - Farewell to the Nest

The morning sun rose over the Chicago skyline, casting a brilliant, golden hue across the iron gates of our estate. It was departure day. Marcus stood beside his packed bags on the grand gravel driveway, waiting for the black sedan that would take him to O'Hare International Airport for his flight back to California.

Eva and Lily stood nearby, clinging to his arms, protesting his departure with all the dramatic flair of two heartbroken younger sisters.

"Do you really have to go back to California so soon?" Eva complained, looking up at him with big, expressive eyes that hadn't known a single day of silence since the afternoon he shared his peanut butter sandwich with her. "Can't you just code your spaceship from your old room here?"

Marcus laughed, kneeling down to hug them both tightly. "I promise I'll be back for Thanksgiving break, guys. And remember, the automated treehouse control system we programmed is fully operational—just don't hack the security codes while I'm gone!"

I walked down the stone steps, handing Marcus his boarding pass and a secure encrypted tablet. "Your flight is confirmed. Viktor has a security detail waiting at the San Francisco airport to ensure you reach campus safely."

Marcus stood up, taking the tablet, and looked at me with deep, enduring respect. "Thanks, Boss. For everything. For keeping me safe, for believing in me, and for showing me what a real family looks like."

"You earned every bit of it, kid," I said, pulling him into a firm, paternal embrace. "Now go conquer Silicon Valley. Make us proud."

As the black sedan pulled away down the driveway, carrying Marcus toward his bright future, I stood beside my daughters on the gravel path, watching the dust settle.

Later that afternoon, my legal team executed the pre-emptive strike against Julian Vance. By the time Julian arrived at the federal courthouse with his stolen cold case ledger to stage a dramatic public press conference, federal prosecutors had already filed the documents voluntarily, rendering Julian's entire blackmail scheme utterly worthless. Cameras flashed in frustration as federal marshals escorted a furious Julian away from the courthouse steps for illegal wiretapping and document theft. The ghost from my past was laid to rest permanently, without a single shot fired.

Standing on the terrace that evening, watching the sunset paint the sky in shades of violet and gold, I realized that the fortress I had built years ago to keep the world out had finally transformed into a home that welcomed the light in.
