Chapter 22 - The Silicon Valley Threat

The mention of Damian Vance’s name hit Marcus like a physical blow. For two years, he had believed that leaving Chicago meant leaving the violent underworld behind, that his association with the former syndicate boss was safely buried beneath layers of legitimate philanthropy and corporate restructuring. Hearing strangers utter Damian's name on a quiet college campus in California shattered that illusion instantly.
"I don't know what you're talking about," Marcus said, keeping his voice steady despite the adrenaline hammering against his ribs. "Leave me alone."
"We're just offering a business proposition, Marcus," the taller man replied smoothly, stepping directly into his path. "Your predictive algorithm can forecast consumer market shifts down to the microsecond. In the right hands, it's worth billions. In your hands, it's a target. Think about your sister back in Chicago. Think about how fragile a college student's life really is."
A surge of hot, incandescent fury rushed through Marcus's veins. They were threatening Lily. They were using his family as leverage, exactly the way Viktorov had tried to do years ago.
Without breaking stride, Marcus didn't cower. Instead, he reached into his pocket, pulled out his phone, and tapped the screen with practiced speed. "You just made the biggest mistake of your lives," he said coldly.
Before the two men could react, Marcus pressed a pre-programmed emergency shortcut. At that exact second, halfway across the country in Chicago, a silent red alarm flashed across a secure monitoring console inside Damian Vance’s private study.
The two corporate thugs lunged forward to grab him, but Marcus pivoted sharply, ducking under the taller man's arm and sprinting toward the brightly lit student union building fifty yards away. Behind him, he heard heavy footsteps pounding against the pavement, shouting curses into the night air.
Marcus didn't look back. He burst through the glass doors of the student union, the bright lights and buzzing chatter of dozens of late-night studying students washing over him like a wave. The two men stopped at the entrance, realizing that snatching a student in a crowded public building in broad campus view was impossible. They exchanged a dark, frustrated look before melting back into the California night.
Marcus collapsed onto a nearby couch, his chest heaving, his hands trembling slightly as he held his phone. He dialed a secure encrypted number. It rang twice before a deep, calm, unmistakably dangerous voice answered on the other end.
"Talk to me, kid," Damian Vance said without preamble.
"Boss," Marcus panted, trying to steady his breathing. "They found me. Two men in suits on campus. They mentioned your name. They threatened Lily."

On the other end of the line, the temperature in Damian's voice plummeted to absolute zero. The benevolent father and retired businessman vanished in a single heartbeat, replaced instantly by the ruthless syndicate lord who ruled the Midwest with an iron fist.
"Pack your bags, Marcus," Damian commanded quietly, his voice carrying the terrifying weight of absolute authority. "Viktor and I are catching a private jet to San Francisco tonight. Nobody threatens my family on my watch."
