Chapter 56 - Springtime Engagements

Spring returned to Chicago with an explosion of color, painting the estate gardens in vibrant hues of lilac, cherry blossoms, and emerald green. The romance between Marcus and Dr. Elena had blossomed beautifully over the winter months, developing from a professional collaboration into a deep, meaningful partnership grounded in shared values of science, healing, and community service.

It was a brilliant Saturday afternoon in late April. The sun warmed the stone terrace where the family gathered for lemonade and freshly baked pastries. Elena was visiting for the weekend, laughing easily as Eva and Lily excitedly explained the inner workings of their automated greenhouse project.

I sat at the patio table with Marcus, watching the girls show Elena their botanical inventions.

"She's wonderful, Marcus," I said quietly, leaning back in my chair. "You know that, right?"

Marcus smiled, his gaze resting affectionately on Elena as she knelt beside Eva to inspect a sprouting tomato plant. "She really is, Boss. Sometimes I still pinch myself, wondering how I got so lucky. From sleeping four hours a night in a crumbling tenement to having a career I love, a family I cherish, and... someone special to share it with."

"You earned every bit of happiness coming your way," I said firmly. "Never doubt that."

Later that evening, after the girls had gone upstairs and Elena was resting in the guest suite, Marcus asked to speak with me privately in my study. He walked across the room, stopping in front of my executive desk, looking surprisingly nervous—a rare expression for a brilliant computer science pioneer who had stared down syndicate bosses in foreign countries.

"Boss," Marcus began, clearing his throat slightly. "I... I wanted to ask your advice about something important."

I set my fountain pen aside, leaning forward with an encouraging smile. "Shoot, kid. What's on your mind?"

Marcus reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a small, elegant velvet jeweler's box. He popped the lid open, revealing a stunning, minimalist diamond ring that sparkled brilliantly in the warm study light.

"I'm going to ask Elena to marry me," Marcus said, his voice steadying with resolute conviction. "And... before I do, I wanted to ask you. As a father. If I have your blessing to officially join this family for the rest of my life."

May you like

I stared at the ring, a powerful wave of emotion choking off my words for a brief second. I stood up from my leather chair, walked around the desk, and pulled Marcus into a fierce, paternal embrace.

"You didn't need to ask for my blessing, son," I whispered, emotion thick in my throat. "You've been my son since the day you walked onto my lawn and shared half a sandwich with my daughter. Go make her the happiest woman on earth."
