Chapter 35 - The Shadow in the Mirror

Within twenty-four hours, Viktor’s underground surveillance network traced the anonymous tip regarding Pendelton’s sunken car to a familiar, dangerous source: a corrupt former federal prosecutor named Julian Vance—no relation, but a man who had spent his entire career trying and failing to pin a RICO indictment on my syndicate before I went legitimate. Julian had been forced out of the Justice Department in disgrace years ago, but he had spent his exile nursing a bitter obsession with destroying my legacy.

I sat in my private study at the estate late that evening, reviewing the dossier Viktor had compiled on Julian’s current operations. He was operating out of a heavily guarded brownstone on the city's North Side, coordinating with a coalition of disgruntled former syndicate rivals who wanted to claw back the territory I had surrendered.

The heavy oak door opened quietly, and Marcus walked in. He was holding a cup of tea, having just finished packing his bags for his return flight to Stanford the following morning. When he saw the grim expression on my face, he paused near the desk.

"You're tracking something," Marcus observed quietly, setting his mug down on the edge of the mahogany wood. "Another threat?"

"An old ghost, kid," I replied, leaning back in my leather chair. "Julian Vance. He thinks he can use an 8-year-old cold case ledger to destroy everything we've built."

Marcus walked around the desk, glancing down at the open dossier. "So what's the play? Do we hit his brownstone? Do we neutralize him before he can take the ledger to the press?"

I looked up at Marcus, studying the sharp, intelligent young man standing before me. In many ways, he was my true successor—not in crime, but in strength, loyalty, and unwavering resolve.

"No," I said softly. "We don't raid his brownstone. We beat him at his own game. Julian wants a public war? We starve him of the spotlight."

Marcus raised an eyebrow. "How?"

"By going public ourselves," I explained, a cold, confident smile touching my lips. "Tomorrow morning, before Julian can leak that ledger to the media, my legal team will hand it directly to the federal attorney general's office—along with a complete, voluntary audit of every financial transaction my former syndicate ever made, fully cooperative under the witness protection and corporate immunity statutes we negotiated during my retirement. We take away his leverage before he even has a chance to pull the trigger."

Marcus stared at me for a second, then a brilliant grin broke across his face. "That's brilliant. You're turning his entire weapon against him."

"In business, Marcus—just like in chess—the best defense is always a devastating counter-attack," I said, standing up and clapping him on the shoulder. "Now, get some sleep. Tomorrow morning, you're catching a flight to Stanford, and I'm going to clean house in Chicago once and for all."
