Chapter 48 - Return to the Sanctuary

Within forty-eight hours of Rostov’s dramatic arrest in Zurich, our private Gulfstream jet touched down once again on the private airfield in Chicago. The transition from the snow-capped peaks of the Swiss Alps back to the familiar, tree-lined boulevards of our northern suburb felt like waking up from a heavy, turbulent dream into a brilliant, sunlit reality.

The heavy iron security gates opened smoothly for our convoy of black SUVs, and as we rolled up the grand gravel driveway, the front doors of the mansion swung wide open.

Eva and Lily came sprinting across the manicured lawn, laughing and shouting with uncontainable excitement. Eva, now a bright, talkative ten-year-old, reached the car first, throwing her arms around Marcus’s neck the moment he stepped out of the vehicle.

"You're back! You're really back!" Eva cheered happily, burying her face against his jacket. "We watched the international news on television! Did you really lock the bad guys in a Swiss jail?"

Marcus laughed, lifting her off the ground with a joyful spin. "Every single one of them, squirt. The foundation's servers are safe, and we even brought home a few extra endowment millions for your favorite youth coding programs."

Right behind her came Lily, running with the athletic grace of a track star, holding a handmade welcome-home banner that read: WELCOME HOME, HEROES!

I stepped out of the vehicle, watching the children surround Marcus with such pure, unconditional affection. Viktor stood beside me, offering a rare, approving smile as he adjusted his sunglasses.

That evening, the grand dining room was set for a celebratory feast. Candles flickered in crystal holders, casting a warm, golden glow across the long mahogany table laden with roasted meats, fine wine, and all our favorite dishes. At the head of the table sat Damian, raising a glass of sparkling cider as he looked around at the vibrant, chaotic, perfectly imperfect family we had built together.

"To new beginnings," Damian said softly, his voice carrying a resonant warmth that silenced the joyful chatter around the table. "To resilience, to loyalty, and to the unwavering strength of a family that stands together against any storm."

"To family!" everyone echoed cheerfully, clinking their glasses together in a joyful chorus that echoed off the high-vaulted ceilings of the dining hall.
