Chapter 85 - The Foundry's Secret

"She's bluffing," Marcus muttered instantly, his knuckles whitening on his grip. "We left an entire squad behind to secure the youth center."

"Clara Vance never bluffs with collateral," Vincent said, his voice deadly calm. He looked at Emma. "She doesn't mean a ground assault. She means a systemic breach."

"The water system," Emma said suddenly, her eyes widening in horror. "The Bridgeport center is built directly over the old canal feeder pipe. When my grandfather worked the shifts, he told me that during the winter freezes, the city pumped pressurized steam through the municipal sub-mains to keep the lines clear. If someone over-pressurizes the secondary valves..."

"The boiler room will detonate," Vincent finished. "And collapse the entire city block."

"We can't let that happen!" Emma urged, clutching Vincent's arm. "There are over seventy kids in that shelter right now! Families who have nowhere else to go!"

"We aren't going to let it happen," Vincent declared. He turned to Marcus. "Divert the convoy to the South Branch Foundry. The old Sterling ironworks."

Marcus blinked in surprise. "The abandoned foundry? Boss, that place has been cold since we raided their smuggling cache last month."

"It's cold on the surface," Vincent replied, tapping the brass watch in his hand. "Underneath the blast furnaces lies the manual pressure override for the Bridgeport hydraulic sector. The Sterling family thought they were sitting on a scrap metal yard; in reality, they were built right on top of the original valve manifold."

Ten minutes later, the armored vehicles breached the rusted gates of the South Branch Foundry. The massive steel structure rose like a skeletal titan against the darkening grey sky, snow piling high on the corrugated iron roofs. Inside, freezing drafts whistled through shattered clerestory windows, disturbing century-old layers of rust and industrial soot.

Vincent led the way, carbine drawn, while four security operatives formed a tight protective box around Emma.

They moved past silent casting pits and dormant overhead cranes, descending a narrow iron staircase into the subterranean maintenance sublevels. Here, the air turned humid and heavy with the scent of copper, ozone, and stagnant subterranean water.

At the lowest level, deep within the bedrock, sat an imposing circular door made not of steel, but of solid naval brass, completely unmarred by time. Embedded into the center was a recessed circular slot exactly matching the diameter of Emma’s pocket watch.

"This is it," Emma said, stepping forward.

"Wait," Vincent warned, raising a hand. His sharp eyes scanned the shadows around the brass portal. "We aren't alone."

From behind the massive hydraulic pipes lining the perimeter, figures stepped forward into the dim emergency lights.

Leading them was not Clara Vance, but a broken, disheveled figure clutching an automatic pistol with shaking hands.

It was Victoria Sterling.

Her designer coat was torn, her blonde hair matted with grime and dried blood, her face a mask of frantic, crazed despair.

"You..." Victoria spat, leveling the shaking gun directly at Emma. "You took my name! You took my fortune! You took my mother! And now they told me... if I bring them your head, they'll give me back my life!"
