Chapter 116 - The Crushing Weight of Vengeance

The electromagnetic crane activated with a sound like a lightning strike trapped in a box. An invisible, irresistible magnetic field seized the iron vanguard. Rifles were ripped violently from soldiers' hands, clattering upward to stick against the massive magnetic plate suspended thirty feet in the air. Julian Sterling’s ballistic shields were wrenched away with bone-shattering force, sending his elite bodyguards sprawling across the oil-stained concrete.

"What is this?!" Julian yelled, his own sidearm yanked from his holster and flying upward into the darkness.

Vincent stepped out from behind the kiln, his weapon aimed squarely at Julian’s chest. "It’s American steel, Julian. Something your family only ever traded on paper, but never understood."

Julian backed away toward the burning breach, his eyes wild with terror as the remaining Vanguard operatives scrambled to retrieve secondary non-metallic blades or retreat to their transport vehicles. "You won't make it back to Chicago! The highways are blocked! The National Guard has been mobilized under Sovereign Council directives! You are trapped in Indiana!"

"Then we won't take the highway," Emma said, stepping up beside Vincent, her rifle held low and ready.

Behind them, the low rumble of a diesel engine shook the subterranean floor. From the depths of the slag pit, an ancient industrial switch engine—a heavy, armored diesel locomotive once used to transport molten slag between the Gary mills and the rail yards—pushed through the iron blast doors, its headlights cutting two blazing beams through the smoke. Sofia Ward stood on the boarding platform, gesturing toward them.

"Get on!" Carter yelled from the engineer's cabin. "The rail line connects directly to the subterranean freight tunnels under the Chicago Loop! The old postal mail tracks!"

Julian made a desperate dive for an abandoned pistol on the floor, but Vincent fired a warning shot directly between his outstretched fingers, splintering the concrete. "Next one is through your eye, Julian. Run back to Katherine. Tell her the waitress is coming to collect the bill."

Julian scrambled backward on his hands and knees, terror finally breaking his delusions of grandeur, and fled out into the freezing Indiana night.

Vincent grabbed Emma’s hand, pulling her up the steel steps of the locomotive just as a second wave of Council reinforcements entered the yard. Bullets clattered uselessly against the four-inch-thick steel hull of the vintage engine. Carter pulled the throttle back with a deafening blast of the air horn, and the massive diesel beast lurched forward, crashing through the exterior blast doors and plunging into the dark, forgotten freight tunnels beneath the south shore.

Inside the rattling, shadowed cab of the locomotive, Emma slumped against the steel wall, catching her breath. Vincent knelt before her, gently wiping a streak of black grease and blood from her forehead.

"Are you all right?" he asked softly, the terrifying billionaire warlord vanishing, replaced entirely by the man who had stood beside her through every trial.

"I’m alive," Emma said, taking his hand and pressing it against her cheek. "How much time do we have until midnight?"

May you like

Vincent checked his mechanical watch. The glass was cracked, but the hands swept forward with cold precision. "Three hours. Three hours to penetrate the most heavily guarded financial fortress in the world: The Chicago Board of Trade."
