Chapter 143 - The Shadow Over Michigan Avenue

The rigid inflatable boat cut through the icy chop of the inner harbor, slipping past the shadow of Navy Pier under cover of the pre-dawn fog. Marco brought the vessel into the subterranean drainage basin beneath the old municipal freight tunnel—a forgotten nineteenth-century network of subterranean tracks that had once carried coal beneath the Loop, long since converted by the Moretti family into a private transit artery.
Emma stood up slowly, her muscles aching from the cold. The foil blanket rustled around her, but her trembling had stopped. The adrenaline had burned through the chill, leaving behind a cold, crystalline focus. She had started this journey as a waitress serving champagne to arrogant elites who viewed her as invisible; now, she stood at the epicenter of a shadow war that was tearing the second city apart.
"They're framing us," Emma said, her voice quiet as she followed Vincent up the iron ladder onto the dry concrete staging platform. "Julian scuttled his own ship not just to kill us, but to provide the physical pretext. A naval disaster within sight of the Gold Coast."
"Julian was a rabid dog on a very long leash," Vincent answered, setting the titanium drive down upon a stainless-steel workbench where two Moretti technical specialists immediately began hooking up bypass cables and liquid-nitrogen cooling lines. "He was promised the restoration of the Sterling name. But the entity that supplied those corvettes, the entity that cleared his munitions through the Great Lakes maritime transit corridor—that requires federal authority."
The heavy vault door at the end of the platform opened with a pneumatic hiss. Mrs. Evelyn Moretti entered, accompanied by a small retinue of armed personal guards. The elderly matriarch wore a tailored wool coat, her silver hair immaculate despite the hour. Her sharp eyes scanned Vincent from head to toe, noting the blood on his forehead, before softening as she looked at Emma.
"You survived the lake," Evelyn said, stepping forward and extending a gloved hand to touch Emma’s cold cheek. "The news stations are claiming you two detonated an ammonium nitrate barge to conceal corporate espionage. Senator Bennett has already called a six a.m. emergency press conference from the Dirksen Federal Building."
"Senator Bennett," Vincent repeated, his eyes narrowing into cold slits. "He was Julian’s contact in Washington. The man who blocked the federal inquiry into the Gary steel refineries three years ago."
"More than that, Vincent," Evelyn said solemnly. "Bennett was your father’s final business partner before the plane crash over Lake Superior. The records Julian attempted to scrub from that drive do not merely contain weapons manifests. They contain the ledger of the Syndicate—the unified alliance between corrupt state senators, the Sterling family's logistics front, and the foreign investment cabal that has been purchasing the Great Lakes freshwater rights through shell corporations."
The technician at the terminal raised his hand. "Sir! The bypass is complete. We've retrieved the uncorrupted ninety-nine percent of the data before the scuttling pulse hit the sector clusters."
Vincent and Emma moved to the monitors. Strings of encrypted green code unspooled across three high-definition displays, resolving into blueprints, wire transfers, and digital audio intercepts.
Emma pointed at a line of highlighted text. "Look at the routing numbers. The shipments of heavy ordnance weren't going through civilian docks. They were being stamped by the Chicago Port Authority under a diplomatic seal."
"Signed by Bennett himself," Vincent said grimly. "He provided the diplomatic umbrella, Julian supplied the muscle, and Victoria was meant to secure the social and financial narrative among Chicago's elite. When Victoria failed at the gala—when you stopped her from striking my grandmother, Emma—you threw a wrench into their timeline. They were forced to accelerate their coup."
"Vincent," Evelyn warned, her cane striking the floor with a decisive snap. "Bennett has deployed the Federal Tactical Liaison unit. They have surrounded the Moretti Tower on Michigan Avenue. They claim to possess an executive order allowing them to seize all corporate assets under the National Security Act. If they seize the main servers before we can upload this ledger to the Department of Justice, the narrative will be set in stone. You will be declared domestic combatants."
Vincent turned to Emma, his expression unreadable, yet there was an intensity burning behind his gray eyes that had not been there hours before. "The front doors are locked. The media is waiting for a bloodbath. They expect us to flee or go to ground in our rural estates."
May you like
Emma tightened the straps of her combat vest, her eyes meeting his without a hint of fear. "Then we don't flee. We go through the front door."
