Chapter 190 - The Final Reckoning at Dawn

A deep, deafening hydraulic chime resonated from the center of the floor.

The circular flagstones beneath the mercenaries' feet dropped four inches, instantly locking into an emergency lockdown grid. High-pressure steam vents, dormant for nearly a century, ruptured from the perimeter walls, blinding Victoria’s operators in an impenetrable wall of scalding white fog.

"Fire!" Victoria shrieked.

Gunfire ripped through the chamber, but the mercenaries were shooting blind, their thermal scopes useless against the boiling clouds of vapor.

Vincent moved like a phantom through the mist.

He closed the distance to the nearest operator, disarming the man with brutal efficiency, using the mercenary's own body as a shield against incoming fire before driving him into the stone pillar. He swept the rifle from the second operator's hands, striking him across the helmet with the butt of the stock, neutralizing the threat before the man could draw a sidearm.

Emma didn't hesitate. She surged forward through the steam, targeting the remaining flank.

A mercenary lunged at her with a combat knife; she ducked beneath the arc of the blade, drove her heel into the side of his knee, and wrenched the weapon from his grip with a textbook disarm. As he fell, she struck him across the temple, sending him sprawling into the flooded drainage trench.

Victoria turned to flee back toward the surface entrance, but her high heels caught on the shattered masonry. She stumbled, tumbling onto the rough flagstones, her revolver skittering across the wet floor.

Before she could reach for it, a heavy combat boot stepped down hard on the barrel, pinning the steel to the ground.

Victoria looked up, trembling, her face pale as a corpse.

Vincent stood over her, his dark trench coat billowing in the drafting steam, his weapon leveled between her eyes. Beside him, Emma stood shoulder to shoulder, the captured blade gleaming in the amber light.

"It's over, Victoria," Emma said, her voice ringing clear and merciless through the falling mist.

Victoria spat blood onto the floor, her eyes burning with pure malice. "You think you've won? You think Chicago belongs to you now?"

"Chicago belongs to the people who built it," Vincent replied coldly. "Not the vultures who fed on its carcass."

On the master desk, the central monitor flashed green:

*SOVEREIGN PROTOCOL: RESTORED.*

*ALL STERLING ASSETS LIQUIDATED AND SEQUESTERED.*

*EMERGENCY GRID ONLINE.*

Through the shattered entrance above, the first pale rays of winter dawn began to spill down into the ancient chamber, mingling with the dissipating steam. Sirens wailed in the distance—not the ominous sirens of private mercenaries, but the authorized emergency vehicles of federal authorities who had finally broken through the corporate blockade.

Victoria stared at the screen, her empire reduced to lines of dead code. She slumped against the broken limestone, laughing weakly through her tears, broken and utterly defeated.
