Chapter 157 - The Gary Line

The sound of the roaring water below began to steady as the lower locks equalized, leaving the catwalk suspended in a cold, echoing silence.

Marco climbed up the last rung, his face dark, holding a dripping satellite communicator that miraculously still showed a faint amber sync light.

"We have five minutes before they flood this shaft with thermal drones," Marco said, deliberately ignoring the raw emotional tension between his boss and the woman who had saved their lives multiple times. "The river breach bought us time, but Arthur’s men are already sealing the surface exits along Wacker Drive. The entire Loop is crawling with unmarked armored vehicles under the guise of the blackout emergency response."

Vincent took a deep, steadying breath, pulling his mask of executive authority back over his features, though his eyes never left Emma. "Where is our extraction?"

"Nowhere near the city center," Marco replied grimly. "Every helipad and highway within a twenty-mile radius of the Loop is flagged. But the south shore rail line—the old freight line running out of the Pullman yard toward Indiana—is dead iron. No electronic monitoring, no modern transponders. If we can reach the yard, we can get out to the Gary works."

"Gary?" Emma questioned, wiping cold water from her forehead, her tactical instincts once again overriding her personal rage. "Arthur’s intercept cable showed a transport convoy entering the underground bunker beneath the Gary steel works ten minutes ago. Why would we run straight into his stronghold?"

"Because it’s not his stronghold," Vincent said, turning to look down the dark tunnel shaft leading south. "Gary was my father’s fallback position. Arthur thinks he owns it because he designed the outer perimeter in the seventies. But my father spent the last ten years of his life refitting the subterranean sub-levels. He knew Arthur was still out there. He knew the Sovereign protocol would one day be activated."

Emma looked at him, searching his eyes for deceit. "What did your father leave down there?"

"The master override," Vincent replied. "The Sovereign Network isn't controlled by a man; it's controlled by an analog mainframe embedded fifty feet beneath the blast furnaces. Arthur has the primary biometric key, but my father built a fail-safe. A bloodline lockout that requires two distinct signatures."

"Two?" Marco frowned. "Sir, you're the only living descendant of the Moretti line."

"Not two Morettis," Vincent whispered, turning his gaze back to Emma, the weight of the realization hanging heavily in the cold air. "My father didn't destroy Calumet Steel out of greed, Emma. He seized it because Thomas Ward—your grandfather—co-founded the Sovereign Trust in 1965. You aren't an accident. You were never an accident. The trust cannot be reclaimed by Arthur without the consent of both bloodlines."
