Chapter 171 - The Sovereign Trigger

The submarine wallowed heavily in the icy swells of Lake Michigan, half-submerged in the frozen slush, sirens wailing faintly from the distant shoreline as Chicago police boats and Coast Guard cutters scrambled into the water.
Vincent moved toward the unconscious form of his mother, pulling zip-ties from his tactical vest to secure her wrists. "It's over, Helena. You're going to answer for every life you destroyed."
Suddenly, Helena’s eyes snapped open. There was no fear in them. Only a chilling, triumphant madness.
"You really believe Christopher Ward built this ship to save you, Vincent?" Helena whispered, her bloodied lips curving into a grotesque smile.
Emma frowned, stepping closer to the central console. On the primary navigation plot, a secondary sub-routine had suddenly unlocked upon breaching the surface.
*PROJECT AEGIS: PHASE TWO ENGAGED.*
"Vincent..." Emma said, her voice turning hollow. "Look at the screen."
Vincent snapped his gaze to the terminal. A countdown was not stopping; it had merely shifted targets. The green light on the console began blinking rapidly in sync with a digital transmitter broadcasting a high-frequency burst across the Chicago metropolitan area.
"The missiles were never the true payload," Helena rasped, coughing up blood as she laughed weakly against the bulkhead. "The Sovereign isn't a weapon system, my dear boy. It's an executive execution command. The moment the *Tartarus* surfaced, the encrypted archives were broadcast to every television, cell phone, and federal terminal in the country."
"What archives?" Vincent demanded, seizing Helena by the collar.
"Every secret," Helena whispered, her dark eyes gleaming. "Every bribe. Every compromised judge. Every illegal merger that built Moretti Enterprises, Sterling Global, and every dynasty that rules this nation. Including the evidence that your own father was the one who ordered the assassination of Emma's grandfather to keep the submarine buried."
Emma froze, the world spinning around her as she stared at Vincent in sheer horror. "Vincent... what is she saying?"
"She's lying, Emma! Don't listen to her!" Vincent pleaded, turning to look at her, his voice cracking with desperation.
Before Emma could respond, a thunderous explosion rocked the rear compartment of the submarine.
The blast doors at the rear of the bridge blew inward off their hinges in a shower of flame and shrapnel. Through the smoke, four heavily armored figures stepped onto the bridge—not wearing Sovereign insignia, but the black tactical uniform of the United States Special Operations Command, their assault rifles raised, targeting both Vincent and Emma with lethal intent.
Leading them was a man whose cold face was plastered across every billboard in Illinois—Governor Thomas Caldwell, holding a gold detonator in his gloved hand.

"Thank you for bringing the submarine to the surface, Mr. Moretti," the Governor said with a chilling smile. "Now, we will take custody of Miss Ward... and ensure none of you leave this bridge alive."
The soldiers raised their weapons, their fingers tightening on the triggers, as the bridge plunged into darkness.
