Chapter 68 - The Phantom Sovereign

"The watch," Emma said, pointing at Vincent’s pocket. "The coordinates on your father's watch aren't geographic. They're tumbler sequences!"

Vincent pulled out the brass watch. His fingers, covered in gunpowder soot and blood, carefully aligned the minute hand with the etched gears inside the casing. A series of numbers clicked into place: *4-19-6-8.*

He stepped up to the massive wheel on the vault door. With each turn of the heavy tumbler, deep mechanical clicks reverberated through the subterranean rock beneath Lake Michigan’s basin.

*Clack. Clack. Clunk.*

With a deep, hydraulic groan that hadn't sounded in thirty years, the heavy steel door broke its airtight seal, swinging slowly outward on massive bronze hinges.

Emma stepped inside beside Vincent, their tactical lights cutting through the stagnant darkness.

There was no gold. There were no stacks of counterfeit bills.

In the center of the vault stood a single, climate-controlled titanium lockbox resting upon a stone pedestal. Next to it was an old reel-to-reel audio recorder and a stack of leather-bound ledgers.

Vincent approached the pedestal, his gloved fingers opening the unlatched titanium lid.

Inside lay a collection of encrypted micro-drives, government dossiers bearing the seals of the Department of Defense, the Federal Reserve, and foreign diplomatic embassies—and a single handwritten letter in his father’s handwriting, addressed simply to: *VINCENT.*

Vincent opened the yellowed parchment. Emma leaned in close, reading the words illuminated under their flashlight:

> *Vincent,*

>

> *If you are reading this, Evelyn Cross has finally come for the harvest. What lies in this box is not wealth. It is the absolute record of every treasonous transaction made by the Sovereign Ledger to corrupt the leadership of this nation.*

>

> *Marcus Vance was only a pawn. The true head of the snake was never in Washington. She was always in Chicago.*

>

> *Evelyn Cross is not a stranger to us, my son. She is your mother's sister.*

Emma’s breath hitched in her throat. She looked up at Vincent, whose face had gone completely expressionless—a mask of cold, terrifying shock.

"Your aunt..." Emma whispered.

Before Vincent could speak, the heavy blast door behind them creaked.

The lock had not been breached from the outside with explosives. It had been unlocked with a master key.

The door swung wide open. Standing in the entrance, flanked by six elite private security contractors dressed in black combat dress with suppressed rifles, was a tall, elegant woman with silver hair pulled into a severe chignon, wearing a tailored cashmere coat over a Kevlar vest.

In her gloved hand, she held a silver-plated revolver.

Evelyn Cross stepped into the vault, her dark eyes gleaming with cold triumph.

"Hello, nephew," she said softly.
