Chapter 178 - The Sanctuary of the Outcasts

Twenty minutes later, the Sikorsky touched down not at an airport, but inside the hollowed-out carcass of the abandoned Pullman Rail Yards on Chicago’s south side.

The hangar was a cavernous monument to industrial decay, cloaked in darkness except for portable halogen work lights. As the helicopter blades spun down, a dozen armed men in unmarked tactical gear surrounded the craft, securing the perimeter with military discipline.

Stepping forward from the shadows was Marcus Vance—a towering, broad-shouldered man in his late fifties with a scarred jaw and cold, slate-gray eyes.

"Vincent," Vance said, his voice deep and raspy. He stepped up to the helicopter and offered a hand, helping Vincent down before turning his sharp gaze onto Emma. His eyes softened with a mixture of reverent shock and profound guilt. "Miss Ward. By God... you look just like your grandfather."

"Don't speak about him like you're his friend," Emma snapped, stepping down onto the concrete without taking his hand. She held the encrypted Sovereign drive tightly in her palm. "Helena Sterling said Vincent’s father had him assassinated. She said the Morettis built their empire on my family’s blood. Did you pull the trigger, Vance?"

The air in the hangar instantly turned to ice. Vance’s men shifted uneasily, hands resting near their sidearms, but Vance raised a single hand, signaling them to stand down.

"Helena told you half the story, Miss Ward," Vance said quietly, looking down at the scarred concrete floor. "She told you just enough truth to make the lie burn. Arthur Moretti didn't order your grandfather's death. He tried to hide him."

Vincent stared at his father’s old enforcer, his voice trembling with a rare, dangerous fury. "Explain yourself, Marcus. Right now."

Vance motioned toward the heavy freight elevator at the back of the hangar. "Downstairs. We brought the surviving server core from Moretti Tower before the Department of Homeland Security raided the building. Governor Caldwell’s faction has already declared Vincent a domestic terrorist, and Emma a person of interest subject to immediate rendition. If you want the truth about what happened forty years ago, you need to see what Arthur left behind."

They walked in tense silence to the freight elevator, dragging the bound Governor Caldwell with them while two guards carried the fading Helena Sterling toward an improvised medical station.

The elevator descended deep into the forgotten subterranean vaults of the Pullman district—a bunker constructed during the height of the Cold War, shielded beneath fifty feet of reinforced concrete and granite.

When the iron gates opened, Emma gasped.

The underground bunker was not a military barracks. It was a massive, temperature-controlled research vault filled with blueprint drafting tables, prototype components, and wall-to-wall archives labeled under a single name: *WARD ENGINEERING LABORATORIES.*
