Chapter 14 - The Fortress

The Moretti Estate sat on a heavily wooded bluff overlooking Lake Michigan, twenty miles north of the city. Surrounded by twelve-foot wrought-iron gates, state-of-the-art surveillance towers, and private security checkpoints, it was less of a mansion and more of an impenetrable fortress.
The morning sun broke through the autumn mist as the motorcade swept up the winding private driveway. Emma looked out the window in awe. The estate was an architectural marvel of limestone, glass, and dark timber, blending seamlessly into the rocky cliffs.
When the car stopped, Julian opened the door, bowing respectfully. "Welcome to the estate, Miss Carter. Young Master Liam."
Liam, feeling much better after a night of rest and breakfast, held tightly to Emma’s hand, his eyes wide as he stared at the grand entrance. "Emma... is this a castle?"
Vincent stepped out of the vehicle, a faint, rare smile touching his lips. "It has enough rooms to be one, Liam. And the library on the third floor has every comic book and science encyclopedia you could ever ask for."
Liam looked up at Vincent with pure hero worship. "Really, Mr. Moretti?"
"Really," Vincent said, lightly ruffling the boy's hair. "Julian will show you to your room. It has a view of the lake."
As the household staff escorted Liam inside, Emma lingered on the grand terrace, the crisp morning wind blowing strands of hair across her face. Vincent stood beside her, hands resting in the pockets of his tailored slacks.
"You don't have to do all this, Vincent," Emma said quietly. "A secure hotel would have been enough."
"Nothing in the city is secure enough against Arthur," Vincent countered. "Here, I control every perimeter, every camera, every person who breathes the air. You saved my grandmother’s dignity when an entire room of cowards looked away. You showed more courage than any billionaire I’ve ever done business with. As long as Arthur is out there, you are under my protection."
Emma looked down at her hands. "I'm just a waitress, Vincent. A girl from the South Side trying to keep her little brother alive. Being here... in your world... it feels surreal."
"You are not just a waitress," Vincent said, stepping closer. The distance between them closed until Emma could feel the heat radiating from him. He reached out, his thumb gently brushing a stray hair from her cheek. His touch was unexpectedly soft, contrasting sharply with his terrifying reputation. "In a world full of parasites, Emma, you are the only real thing I have encountered in a very long time."
Emma's breath caught in her throat. For a suspended second, the violence of Pier 42, the fear, and the shadow of Arthur faded into absolute insignificance.
Before either of them could speak, Julian's hurried footsteps echoed across the marble terrace.

"Sir," Julian said, his expression grim as he held out an encrypted tablet. "You need to see this. The Cook County District Attorney just released a statement regarding Victoria Sterling. And there's a problem at the corporate tower."
