Chapter 160 - The Sovereign Mainframe

Vincent and Emma stepped out of the shadow of the conduit, their weapons raised. Marco fanned out to the right, taking cover behind a massive copper cooling coil, his sightline trained on the six bodyguards flanking the upper catwalks.

"Step away from the console, Arthur," Vincent commanded, his voice echoing with absolute authority.

Arthur slowly turned around, leaning on a fresh cane of dark oak. His face was lined with deep frustration, his usual smug composure cracked.

"Do you know what this machine is, Vincent?" Arthur asked, gesturing to the towering wall of vacuum tubes and mechanical relays that clacked rhythmically in the gloom. "This is the true central nervous system of North American commerce. It controls the pipeline valves from Texas to Canada. It controls the emergency hydro-switches at Niagara. When I built this in 1968, I ensured that no matter what fool was elected president, no matter what economic collapse occurred, the Moretti family would hold the breaker switch."

"And yet," Emma said, stepping forward beside Vincent, "you can't open the vault."

Arthur’s eyes flared with sudden, violent malice. "Your grandfather was a traitor, girl! In 1974, when I staged my death, Thomas Ward altered the biometric logic gates. He introduced an analog dual-key requirement. He knew I would return. He wanted to lock me out of my own creation!"

Arthur banged his cane against the iron floor, the sound ringing like a death knell.

"The vault requires the simultaneous living blood of a Moretti and a Ward," Arthur snarled, his voice turning shrill with rage. "I brought Vincent here to bleed him over the sensor. But having you walk in freely? Fate has a delicious sense of irony."

On the catwalks above, the six guards cocked their assault rifles in unison.

"You don't understand, Arthur," Vincent said calmly, lowering his weapon slightly, not out of surrender, but out of total certainty. "My father didn't just maintain the lock. He reprogrammed the fail-safe."

Arthur froze. "What did he do?"

"He knew that if you ever came back, you would come with an army," Vincent said. "He knew that force could compel blood. So he tied the biometric sensor to a secondary condition."

Vincent reached into his inner jacket pocket and pulled out the heavy gold signet ring he had retrieved from the banquet podium hours before—the ring of the Sovereign.

"The blood doesn't open the vault, Arthur," Emma said, stepping up to the console and looking directly into the old tyrant's eyes. "The blood triggers the purge."
