Chapter 83 - Blood in the Winter Snow

The shockwave threw Emma forward into the dimly lit hallway of the community gym. Vincent rolled across the hardwood floor, instantly regaining his footing, his silhouette outlined against the roaring flames consuming the exterior foyer.
Through the ruined doorway, the heavy boots of four Consortium assault troops crunched on shattered glass.
"Target confirmed," a synthetic, modulated voice boomed through the smoke. "Female asset unharmed. Neutralize the primary hostile. Take the girl alive."
"Over my dead body," Vincent growled under his breath.
He didn't fire from the open. Instead, Vincent melted into the shadows beneath the gymnasium bleachers, moving with the preternatural silence of a phantom. When the first operative entered, tactical flashlight carving beams through the haze, Vincent struck. A gloved hand shot out, seizing the barrel of the operator's carbine, redirecting the muzzle upward before driving a titanium combat knife beneath the man's ballistic collar.
The operative collapsed with a muffled gasp. Vincent snatched the fallen soldier's sidearm, pivoting smoothly to fire through the wooden risers. Two clean shots took down the second soldier advancing through the hallway.
Emma scrambled behind the equipment lockers, her eyes scanning the floor. She found a heavy iron crowbar left behind from ongoing facility repairs. Her hands gripped the cold steel tightly. She wasn't just a former waitress from the diner anymore; she had stood face-to-face with the city's worst predators, and she refused to be a passive prize.
A third operative rounded the locker bank, rifle raised, tracking Emma’s position. Before he could squeeze the trigger, Emma lunged from the shadows, swinging the iron bar with all her strength against the operator's knee joint.
The man grunted in agony, his balance faltering. Emma drove the blunt tip into his chest plate, throwing him off-center. Vincent appeared behind him like a vengeful shadow, gripping the soldier's helmet and snapping his neck with a swift, brutal torque.
Silence descended over the burning corridor, broken only by the crackle of burning drywall and the distant, rhythmic thump of helicopter rotors hovering over the neighborhood.
Vincent knelt beside the fallen operative, ripping off the man's tactical vest to reveal a subcutaneous transponder embedded near the collarbone. He pressed his communicator against the dead man’s comm link.
"Consortium control," Vincent spoke into the encrypted frequency, his voice freezing cold. "Your vanguard is dead. Send whoever else you have left in the sky. Chicago belongs to me."
A moment of dead silence hung on the line. Then, a voice smooth as polished obsidian answered through the digital noise:
*"Brave words, Vincent Moretti. But while you play guardian in the snow, your empire is bleeding from the inside. Look at your watch. Look at your markets. And look at the girl beside you. She doesn't belong to your world. She belongs to the Foundation."*
The frequency abruptly cut to static.
Outside, the roar of roaring diesel engines shook the building. Black armored SUVs stamped with the Moretti family crest smashed through the perimeter fence, scattering the remaining Consortium scouts. Marcus leaped from the lead vehicle, assault rifle in hand, flanked by twelve heavily armed Moretti personal guards.
"Boss! Miss Ward!" Marcus roared through the smoke. "Clear the zone! We've got perimeter breach reports across all downtown sectors!"
Vincent grabbed Emma's hand, escorting her into the reinforced interior of the lead SUV. "What's happening downtown, Marcus?"
May you like
Marcus slammed the reinforced door shut, breathing heavily as the convoy accelerated out into the blizzard. "It's Clara Vance, Boss. She just walked into the Chicago Federal Reserve with a court order signed by the Supreme Court bench... and every safe-deposit vault tied to the Ward estate has been seized."
