Chapter 112 - The Crimson Geyser

The red light pulsing beneath the ice did not simply illuminate the frozen expanse of Lake Michigan; it scalded the frost from the inside out. Webbed fractures tore across the two-foot-thick surface with the crack of artillery fire, boiling plumes of water shooting twenty feet into the freezing gale. The soldiers of the Sovereign Council staggered back, their combat boots sliding across violently vibrating tectonic plates of ice.
"Salvation or Oblivion?" Vincent Moretti’s voice cut through the roar of steam, rasping yet laced with iron resolve. His fingers squeezed Emma’s numb hand. Even battered, bruised, and drained from the long night of war across Chicago’s winter skyline, his dark eyes held no fear. "Whatever choice you make, Emma, make it together."
Katherine Ward’s porcelain composure cracked for the first time. The High Chancellor threw her arms out against the whipping blizzard, her antique gold watch dangling uselessly by its chain. "You fool! You do not comprehend the machinery buried in this bed! The Core Vault does not just control the city's power grid—it anchors the financial and subterranean lifeblood of the entire Midwest! Initiate Oblivion and you sink Chicago into the freshwater trench!"
Emma Ward looked down at the glowing drive. The crimson projection flickered between two runes: one representing the ancient biometric seal forged by her grandmother, the other a total wipeout mechanism conceived by the founders of the Sovereign Syndicate to prevent their empire from falling into unauthorized hands. She didn't seek power. She had never sought the inheritance that had transformed her from a humble Chicago diner waitress into the target of global oligarchs. She had stepped forward on that fateful evening simply because an arrogant heiress named Victoria had dared to raise her hand against a defenseless old woman.
"You took my family's name and turned it into a butcher's bill, Katherine," Emma said, her voice carrying through the hiss of geothermal vents ripping through the shelf. "My grandmother spent fifty years hiding me from you because she knew you would burn the world just to sit on an ash heap."
"Fire at will!" Katherine shrieked, panic finally overwhelming her icy discipline. "Disable her! Take the drive!"
Before a single operative could pull a trigger, the ice sheet split directly down the midline. A deafening sonic boom tore out from the abyssal vault beneath. The lead hovercraft tilted sideways as a column of hyper-pressurized water and ancient hydraulic steam erupted beneath its hull, flipping the four-ton vessel into the roaring lake like a toy.
Emma thrust her thumb onto the pulsating holographic interface. She did not choose Salvation—which would merely yield executive control back to the Sovereign Council's servers—nor did she choose Oblivion, which would detonate the deep geothermal capacitors and flood downtown Chicago. Instead, she twisted the drive clockwise into her palm, engaging a third hidden sub-routine Vincent’s father had encrypted decades ago into the Moretti banking networks: *Systemic Reversion.*
The red glow instantly shifted to an unyielding, blinding sapphire blue.
Beneath them, the massive mechanical locks of the Core Vault didn't detonate; they reversed their magnetic poles. A colossal electromagnetic pulse washed outward in an expanding dome of blue light. The Council’s high-caliber rifles short-circuited in their operators' hands, digital scopes shattering with sharp pops. Hovercraft engines stalled simultaneously, their lithium power cores drained in an instant.
"Fall back! To the shoreline!" Katherine screamed, stumbling backward onto the unstable ice shelf as her elite vanguard collapsed into chaos.
Vincent lunged forward despite his torn shoulder, intercepting the nearest disoriented soldier, stripping him of a sidearm, and firing three precise rounds into the ice at Katherine’s feet. The shelf shattered between them, separating Katherine from Emma by a widening, impassable rift of black, churning water.
"This isn't over, niece!" Katherine spat, clutching her drenched white fur coat as her personal bodyguards dragged her toward their last functional mechanical sled. "The Council sits across seven continents! You hold the key to the vault, but you have no army to defend it!"
May you like
As the surviving Council forces retreated into the howling snow toward the distant lights of Lake Shore Drive, the blue light faded. The lake groaned as the vault sealed itself beneath billions of gallons of frigid water, leaving Emma and Vincent standing on the floating sheet of ice, surrounded by smoke, wreckage, and the silence of a city that had no idea how close it had come to utter ruin.
