Chapter 51 - The Serpent’s Strike

The applause inside the ballroom was deafening as Senator Marcus Vance stepped up to the podium.
Dressed in a pristine bespoke suit, his silver hair neatly styled, he raised his hands with the benevolent, charismatic smile of a seasoned statesman. Beside him, Victoria Sterling beamed, leading the ovation alongside high-ranking military officials and federal judges.
"Thank you, my friends," Vance’s voice echoed through the high-fidelity sound system, broadcast live to over forty million viewers across the country. "Tonight, our great nation stands at a crossroads. For too long, rogue oligarchs like Vincent Moretti have operated above the law, believing their wealth exempts them from civic duty. But today, the rule of law has prevailed."
High above the crowd, concealed in the shadows of the mezzanine gallery behind the velvet curtains, Vincent and Emma stood watching.
Emma clutched the small remote trigger in her hand. "Now, Vincent?"
"Now," Vincent commanded.
Emma pressed the button.
Instantly, the massive digital screens flanking the stage flickered violently. The glossy campaign graphics dissolved, replaced by towering, high-resolution scans of the black ledger: banking routing codes, signed offshore slush funds, wire transfers directly into Vance's personal shell companies, and the declassified municipal report documenting the murder of Emma’s grandfather.
A heavy, suffocating silence descended upon the grand ballroom. The chatter died in an instant.
Across the stage, Vance’s polished smile froze. He turned his head toward the monitors, his face turning an ashen gray as he saw the exact account numbers he had spent thirty years burying plastered across national television.
Through the ballroom's master audio system, Matteo's automated audio broadcast cut through the speakers, reading the ledger’s contents in a cold, computerized cadence:
*"Account 409-B, Cayman Islands. Recipient: Marcus Vance. Origin: Sterling Maritime Fund. Transaction memo: Silencing municipal auditor Hayes..."*
Gasps rippled through the audience. Journalists scrambled for their cameras, pointing their lenses at the horrified Senator. Victoria Sterling stumbled backward, knocking over a tray of champagne flutes with a loud, shattering crash.
Vance gripped the podium, his knuckles turning white, his eyes wild with rage. "Cut the feed! Cut the power! Shut it down now!"
But the backup systems refused to respond.
On the mezzanine balcony, Vincent stepped out of the shadows, coming to the velvet railing in full view of the assembly. The lights caught his tall, imposing figure, his cold gray eyes looking down upon Vance like an executioner surveying the condemned.
"It's over, Marcus," Vincent’s voice carried through the stunned silence of the room.
The guests turned in collective shock, pointing up toward the fugitive billionaire who had walked right into the heart of the Senator's domain.
Vance looked up, pure hatred twisting his features into an ugly, savage snarl. But instead of surrendering to panic, a slow, sickening smile spread across the Senator's lips.
"You really thought this was about a ledger, Vincent?" Vance rasped, his voice picked up by the still-active lapel microphone.
Vincent’s brow furrowed slightly.
Vance reached into his breast pocket and pulled out a small, metallic detonator with a flashing red LED.
"You think like an industrialist," Vance sneered, his eyes gleaming with mad triumph. "You think you can win by exposing the truth. But I told you, boy... I don't care about the rules anymore. Did you really think I didn't know your extraction team was waiting at the docks?"
Before Vincent could react, the heavy double doors at the rear of the mezzanine gallery were kicked violently open behind them.
Emma turned, gasping in horror.
Standing in the doorway, armed with assault rifles, were not federal agents or Vance's private mercenaries.
Leading the strike team was Matteo—holding a weapon pointed directly at Vincent’s chest, his face completely devoid of emotion.
"Matteo...?" Emma whispered, taking a step back in disbelief. "No... you helped us!"
Vincent did not move. He kept his eyes locked on his most trusted confidant, the man who held the master keys to the entire Moretti network.

"Everyone has a price, Vincent," Matteo said coldly, his finger tightening around the trigger. "And the Senator offered me your empire."
Down in the ballroom, Vance began to laugh—a triumphant, demonic roar—as the red light on his detonator pulsed faster, and a deafening explosion ripped through the foundation beneath their feet.
