Chapter 12 - Blood and Shadows

The warehouse plunged into a suffocating, lethal silence. The chill drifting from Lake Michigan seemed to freeze the very air between the two brothers. Julian’s tactical team instantly recalibrated their aim, half a dozen red laser sights shifting from the cowering Mack directly onto Arthur Moretti’s chest.

Arthur didn’t flinch. His lips curled into an amused smirk, his thumb lazily tracing the hammer of the silver revolver.

"Lower your weapons, gentlemen," Arthur murmured, his voice velvety yet dripping with venom. "Unless, of course, you want the detonators wired along the pier's support pilings to go off. You’ve always been thorough, Vincent, but you always forget to look beneath your feet."

Vincent stepped forward, placing his broad frame directly between Arthur’s sightline and Emma, who was kneeling on the cold floor, cradling Liam against her chest. Vincent’s jaw was clenched so hard the muscles jumped beneath his skin.

"You died five years ago in the Mediterranean," Vincent said, his voice dangerously low. "The wreckage was identified."

"A convenient fire, a generous bribe to a Greek coroner, and five years in the shadows watching you play king in my city," Arthur replied, his dark eyes flashing with malice. "Did you really believe our father intended to leave the entire Moretti Conglomerate to the son of a mistress? You took everything that was rightfully mine, Vincent. Victoria was simply a desperate little insect I used to test your defenses—and look how easily she baited you out into the open."

Victoria, curled beside the rusted container, looked up in horror. "Arthur? You said you would protect me! You said you’d restore my family’s name!"

"Be quiet, Victoria," Arthur snapped without looking at her. "Your stupidity at the banquet was an embarrassment, but your panic served its purpose."

Emma clutched Liam closer. The boy’s breathing had stabilized thanks to the inhaler, but he was shivering violently against her. Emma looked up at Vincent’s back—broad, unyielding, an impenetrable wall protecting them from the storm. Yet, she could feel the electric tension radiating from him. This wasn't merely business; this was the ghost of a blood feud.

"If you wanted me, Arthur, you should have faced me alone," Vincent said, his voice dropping into a register that sent chills through the warehouse. "Touching this boy, threatening this woman—you have signed your own death warrant."

"Perhaps," Arthur laughed softly. "Or perhaps you’re too sentimental to notice the timer."

With a flick of his wrist, Arthur tossed a small black canister onto the concrete floor. Dense, blinding white phosphorus smoke exploded upward with a violent hiss.

"Fire!" Julian shouted.

Gunfire ripped through the fog, deafening and chaotic. Vincent pivoted instantly, shielding Emma and Liam with his body, his trench coat wrapping around them as concrete chips flew from stray rounds. When the tactical team rushed the container stacks with high-powered flashlights seconds later, Arthur was gone, vanished through a hidden sea-hatch leading to the black waters beneath Pier 42.

Mack was pinned to the floor by three officers, screaming in terror. Victoria was dragged out from behind a crate in hysterics, her designer dress shredded and smeared with grease.

Vincent slowly straightened, his eyes glowing with ruthless fury as he stared into the swirling smoke. He reached down, offering a hand to Emma.

"Are you hurt?" he asked, his voice softening in a way none of his men had ever witnessed.

Emma took his hand, feeling the calloused strength in his grip as he pulled her effortlessly to her feet. "Liam is alive. That’s all that matters. But Vincent... who was that?"

Vincent’s gaze remained fixed on the dark water churning below the dock. "A monster I should have killed five years ago."
