Chapter 179 - The Architect’s Will

"Your grandfather didn't just build the propulsion system for the *Tartarus*," Vance explained, leading them to the center of the vault where a bank of high-powered servers hummed in the cool air. "Edward Ward designed the entire infrastructural nerve system for modern Chicago—the automated water locks, the power switching stations, the subterranean subway safety protocols. In 1984, the Sterling family and a shadow cabal of corrupt politicians, including Caldwell’s father, realized Edward’s systems gave him unilateral control over the entire Midwest corridor."

Vance stepped up to a glass terminal, gesturing to the encrypted drive Emma held.

"They wanted to weaponize it. They wanted to turn Chicago into a prototype for a privately owned corporate police state. When Edward refused to sell his master access keys, the Sterlings contracted a hit squad. Arthur Moretti—Vincent’s father—discovered the plot too late. He managed to extract Edward’s wife and daughter, giving them new identities, but Edward..." Vance’s voice caught. "Edward stayed behind to purge the mainframes. He died in the explosion at the Gary Foundry."

Emma’s breath hitched. Tears welled in her eyes, burning with forty years of buried pain. "My grandmother... she always kept an old iron key under her mattress. She told me never to trust anyone in a suit. She spent her whole life terrified..."

"Arthur spent the rest of his life pretending to be the Sterlings' ally," Vance said, looking Vincent dead in the eye. "Your father bought into their syndicate so he could catalog every crime, every bribe, every assassination. That's what the Sovereign archives are, Vincent. They weren't built by the Sterlings to conquer. They were built by your father and Edward Ward to destroy the syndicate from within."

"Then why didn't my father pull the trigger before he died?" Vincent demanded, his fists clenching so hard his knuckles turned white.

"Because the final decryption protocol required two biometric signatures," a raspy, weak voice came from behind them.

Helena Sterling, propped up in a wheelchair by a medic, glared at them through swollen, bruised eyes. Her breathing was shallow, but her smile was venomous.

"Arthur died before he could find Edward’s granddaughter," Helena rasped. "And now... it’s too late anyway."

"What did you do, Helena?" Vincent snapped, advancing on her.

Helena pointed a trembling, blood-stained finger toward the large digital monitor mounted above the server banks.

A live television feed was broadcasting from the Illinois State Capitol in Springfield. Standing behind a podium was Lieutenant Governor Richard Hayes, surrounded by heavily armed military personnel and federal marshals.

*"...Under the authority of the Emergency War Powers Act,"* Hayes announced, his face rigid on the screen, *"I am declaring statewide martial law. All civil liberties are suspended. Governor Thomas Caldwell has been declared assassinated by domestic extremists led by Vincent Moretti. A shoot-on-sight order has been issued for Moretti and his accomplice, Emma Ward. Furthermore, all municipal infrastructure in Cook County is being transferred to the private command of IronClad Security Solutions."*

Caldwell let out a bloody laugh from the floor where he was pinned. "You thought I was the mastermind? I was just the field commander, Vincent. Hayes is the Chairman of the Sovereign Board. And in precisely three hours, the IronClad network will take total control of Chicago's automated grid. You're too late."
