Chapter 40 - The Scars of Dawn

The rain finally ceased as the first faint sliver of pale dawn broke over the horizon of Lake Michigan.
Outside the perimeter of the destroyed Gary foundry, a fleet of private emergency vehicles and armored transports formed a tight defensive perimeter. Fire crews were already extinguishing the smoldering ruins of the blast furnace, while Dominic’s tactical operators secured the surrounding area, ensuring no stragglers remained.
Emma sat on the tailgate of an armored SUV, a heavy thermal blanket wrapped around her shoulders. In her lap, Leo was sound asleep, exhausted from the terror, his small head resting against her chest. Emma held him tight, gently stroking his hair, her tears finally drying in the cool morning breeze.
The sound of heavy, rhythmic footsteps echoed across the wet gravel.
Emma looked up. Vincent was walking toward them.
His tactical vest was scorched and dented, his face blackened by soot and stained with dried blood, but he was alive. He walked slowly, every movement carrying the weight of a thirty-year nightmare that had finally come to an end.
When he reached the SUV, he stood before Emma, looking down at her and the sleeping boy. The cold, terrifying mask of the billionaire titan had completely vanished, replaced by an exhaustion so raw and vulnerable it made Emma’s heart ache.
"It’s over," Vincent said quietly, his voice cracked and hoarse. "Helena is gone. The De Rossi syndicate has been completely severed. The offshore accounts are destroyed. Your family... is safe."
Emma looked at him, her breath catching. Slowly, she reached out her free hand, resting her palm against his dirt-streaked jaw. Her touch was gentle, warm, and entirely steady.
"You saved him, Vincent," she whispered, her eyes shining with unshed tears. "You saved both of us."
Vincent leaned into her touch for a brief, breathless moment, closing his eyes as though her hand were the only anchor keeping him grounded in a crumbling world. "I owed you a debt, Emma. But tonight... it was never about a debt."
He opened his eyes, staring deeply into hers, an unspoken truth passing between them that neither could deny.
"Boss," Dominic’s voice broke the silence, approaching with a tablet in hand, his face grave and troubled. "The Chicago field office of the FBI just issued an emergency red notice. We have a severe problem."
Vincent stepped back, his professional guard snapping back into place, though his eyes remained dark. "What is it, Dominic?"
"It’s not Helena," Dominic said, handing the tablet to Vincent. "Helena was working with a third party. Someone inside the United States Senate who authorized the federal transport route that allowed Arthur to be ambushed in the first place."

Emma looked up, alarm spiking through her chest once again. "Who?"
"Senator Marcus Vance," Dominic said grimly. "The chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee. And Victoria Sterling’s biological uncle. He just declared the Moretti Corporation a domestic threat and issued an executive warrant to seize every asset you own."
