Chapter 21 - The Midnight Ambush

Darkness swallowed the estate in a fraction of a second.
The emergency red backup lights flickered to life along the hallways, casting eerie, blood-colored shadows against the walls. A split-second later, the deafening scream of the perimeter breach alarms shattered the midnight silence.
*BEEP! BEEP! BEEP! WARNING: SECTOR 4 PERIMETER COMPROMISED. MULTIPLE INTRUDERS.*
Vincent reacted with terrifying military speed. In an instant, his tenderness vanished, replaced by the lethal commander. He drew a custom Sig Sauer pistol from a concealed holster beneath his arm, pulling Emma down behind the reinforced steel-core mahogany desk.
"Julian!" Vincent barked into his encrypted lapel comms. "Status!"
Static hissed through the earpiece, followed by frantic shouting and the sharp staccato of automatic gunfire. *"Sir! They disabled the main transformer from the cliffside! Heavily armed mercenaries—they’re breaching the east wing! They bypassed the biometric gates!"*
"Get Liam to the secure panic vault beneath the library immediately!" Vincent ordered.
*"I'm on it, sir! But there's someone else—"*
The line went dead with a sickening pop.
"Liam!" Emma gasped, her heart leaping into her throat as terror gripped her. "Vincent, my brother is on the second floor!"
"Stay low, stay behind me," Vincent ordered, his voice steady as steel. "We move through the private gallery. No one touches Liam while I draw breath."
Vincent led Emma out into the corridor. The storm outside was raging with catastrophic fury, lightning flashing through the high arched windows, illuminating the crimson-lit halls. The smell of cordite and smoke was already drifting through the air conditioning vents.
Gunfire echoed from the grand staircase. Two of Vincent’s private guards lay wounded on the marble steps.
Vincent fired three precise shots down the corridor, dropping an advancing masked mercenary in tactical gear. He grabbed the fallen man’s carbine, tossing the spare magazine into his pocket, moving with lethal precision.
They reached the heavy reinforced doors of the second-floor library.
"Liam!" Emma cried out in a desperate whisper.
The library doors swung open.
Inside, little Liam was huddled in the corner, clutching a flashlight, trembling violently. Standing beside him, however, was not Julian.
It was Marcus Vance—the elderly, respected senior board member who had served the Moretti family for thirty years. He held a silenced pistol pointed directly at Liam’s head.
Emma froze, her blood turning to pure ice. "Mr. Vance... what are you doing?!"
"Marcus?" Vincent stared at the old man, his eyes widening in pure disbelief. "You?"
"I'm sorry, Vincent," Marcus Vance said, his face cold, his hand unwavering. "Your father was weak in his final years. He gave the company to a reformer like you, trying to wash away fifty years of blood money. But Arthur understands what power truly requires."
Slow clapping echoed from the shadows behind the towering mahogany bookshelves.
Arthur Moretti stepped forward into the dim light. He wore tactical gear over his dark clothes, a shotgun resting casually against his shoulder. His scar twitched beneath a triumphant grin.
"Checkmate, little brother," Arthur purred. "You built a fortress, but you forgot who helped your father buy the land."
Vincent slowly raised his weapon, his sights locked dead between Arthur’s eyes. "Let the boy go, Arthur. It’s me you want."
"Oh, I want you dead, Vincent. That’s a given," Arthur smiled coldly. "Tonight, the storm takes you both. Emma Carter dies as the tragic collateral of a home invasion, her brother disappears into the night, and tomorrow morning, Marcus will confirm that I have returned to assume full, emergency control of Moretti Global to hunt down your 'killers'."
Arthur raised his shotgun, leveling the barrel directly at Vincent’s chest.
Beside Emma, the heavy glass window overlooking the cliffs began to crack under the pressure of the howling hurricane winds.
Suddenly, from the dark hallway behind them, a loud, metallic click echoed.

A voice Emma had never heard before whispered chillingly from the shadows directly behind her neck:
*"Nobody move... or the girl dies first."*
