Chapter 15 - The Fall of the House of Sterling

The fall of the Sterling family was swift, brutal, and televised across every news network in the nation.
By midday, federal marshals and local detectives had raided the Sterling corporate headquarters on Michigan Avenue and Richard Sterling’s sprawling mansion in Lake Forest. Armed with undeniable evidence provided by Julian’s intelligence team—including encrypted bank transfers between Victoria, Mack, and foreign dummy accounts—the authorities dismantled the family's empire in a matter of hours.
Footage on the flat-screen television in Vincent’s study showed Richard Sterling being led out of his corporate office in handcuffs, his expensive suit rumpled, shouting obscenities at the swarming press.
"Sterling Enterprises has declared bankruptcy following the seizure of their offshore accounts," the news anchor announced. "Victoria Sterling remains held without bail at the Metropolitan Correctional Center, facing charges of aggravated kidnapping, conspiracy, and extortion."
Inside the high-security interrogation room at the federal detention center, however, Victoria was unspooling completely.
Stripped of her diamonds, wearing an oversized orange jumpsuit, Victoria sat across from two stern federal prosecutors. Her face was pale, mascara streaked across her cheeks, her once-manicured nails bitten to the quick.
"I told you, it wasn't my idea!" Victoria shrieked, slamming her cuffed wrists against the steel table. "It was Arthur Moretti! He contacted me through a secure line! He promised me that if I helped him humiliate Vincent and grab the Carter girl, he would give me thirty percent of the Moretti shipping contracts! He set up the warehouse! He hired Mack!"
The lead prosecutor exchanged a skeptical glance with his colleague. "Miss Sterling, Arthur Moretti was declared legally dead five years ago. His death certificate was signed by maritime authorities in Athens. Are you claiming a ghost orchestrated an armed kidnapping?"
"He's alive!" Victoria screamed, hysterical tears flooding her eyes. "He was at Pier 42! Vincent saw him! Ask Vincent!"
The prosecutor leaned forward, tapping his pen on the case file. "We spoke to Mr. Moretti's legal counsel. They confirmed that a rogue armed suspect was present, but no facial identification matched Arthur Moretti. As far as the law is concerned, Miss Sterling, your fingerprints are on the ransom demands, your money paid for the van, and your brother's associate was the trigger-man. You are facing twenty-five years to life."
Victoria collapsed back into her chair, a hollow, strangled wail escaping her throat. She realized, with sickening clarity, that Arthur had played her from the very beginning. He had used her hatred, her arrogance, and her desperation, leaving her to take the fall while he walked into the dark without leaving a single legal trace.
Meanwhile, miles away in an abandoned industrial loft in the West Loop, a burner phone buzzed on a wooden crate.
A gloved hand picked it up. Arthur Moretti listened silently as an informant relayed Victoria's futile attempts to implicate him.

Arthur smiled, tossing the phone into a metal drum filled with burning documents. "Poor Victoria. Always so predictable. But the board meeting is in three hours... and Vincent won't be able to ignore this."
