Chapter 166 - The Ward Legacy Revealed

Vincent led Emma through a narrow maintenance crawlway that ran parallel to the main torpedo handling room. The air here was hot, thick with the smell of heavy grease and coolant lines.
"Your mother mentioned my family," Emma said quietly as they maneuvered through the cramped iron ribs of the hull. "She said the Wards were the architects. Vincent... my grandfather was just a mechanic at the Chicago municipal water cribs. He died with nothing."
Vincent paused beside an open electrical terminal, his eyes softening as he looked at her. "He didn't die with nothing, Emma. He died protecting a secret that kept this entire continent from tearing itself apart."
He gestured to the bronze builder's plate riveted to the structural bulkhead. Stamped into the metal alongside the Moretti industrial crest was an intricate emblem: an anvil enclosed within a compass, bearing the initials *C. WARD - CHIEF NAVAL ENGINEER - PROJECT AEGIS 1968*.
Emma stared at the plate, her fingers trembling as she traced the faded engravings.
"Christopher Ward," she whispered. "My grandfather."
"During the height of the Cold War," Vincent explained, "the Department of Defense feared that Washington and NORAD could be decapitated in a preemptive strike. They commissioned three secret sovereign command platforms. One was built under the Rockies. One was airborne. And the third was hidden beneath the deepest fresh-water lake in the world, capable of overriding every power grid, telecommunication relay, and automated defense silo in North America."
"And my grandfather designed the locking mechanism," Emma realized, the pieces finally slotting together with horrifying clarity.
"He didn't just design it," Vincent said. "He hardcoded it into his own genetic line to ensure that no single corporate interest—not even the Morettis—could wield it as a weapon. Arthur Sterling was desperate to bypass the lock using artificial synthesis. When that failed, Helena stepped out from the shadows. She let Arthur take all the risks, absorb all our attacks, while she waited for me to find you."

Before Emma could speak, the maintenance crawlway shuddered violently. A loud klaxon began to blare throughout the ship, followed by the sound of heavy pneumatic seals locking down ahead of them.
