Chapter 48 - The Secret of the Black Book

As the night deepened, the storm over Lake Michigan intensified, rain drumming violently against the reinforced windows of the compound.
Inside the study, Matteo arrived via a hidden overland route, carrying secure hard drives and satellite communication equipment. His expression was grim as he set down his gear.
"Vance is moving faster than we anticipated," Matteo reported, spreading out satellite imagery and intelligence briefs across the table. "He just announced a private gala at his sprawling estate in Lake Forest for tomorrow evening. Officially, it’s a high-dollar fundraiser for his upcoming presidential bid. Unofficially, he’s invited the top twenty defense contractors, media moguls, and federal magistrates in the country."
"He's consolidating his coalition," Vincent observed, leaning over the maps. "He wants to display his absolute dominance before the media. If he secures their public endorsements tomorrow night, no prosecutor in America will dare touch him, regardless of what we leak."
"There's more," Matteo added, glancing at Emma. "Victoria Sterling is scheduled to appear alongside him. Her family’s surviving shell companies are funneling two hundred million dollars into Vance’s super-PAC tomorrow night at the stroke of midnight. Once that money clears, Vance will have enough leverage to purge the remaining independent voices in the federal judiciary."
Emma stepped closer to the table, her jaw set. The timid waitress who once feared losing her job at the banquet was gone; in her place stood a woman forged by survival, standing beside the man she loved.
"We can't let that gala happen," Emma said firmly.
Matteo shook his head with a tired sigh. "Miss Hayes, Vance's estate in Lake Forest is a fortress. It has an eight-foot perimeter wall, private paramilitary security, radar sweeps, and over fifty federal secret service agents on site because of his senate status. Even if we had our full private security force, attacking that estate would be suicide."
"We aren't going to attack it," Vincent said, his eyes narrowing with a sharp, dangerous intellect.
Matteo and Emma looked at him.
Vincent turned the page of the black ledger to a fold-out schematic tucked into the rear binding. "Your grandfather wasn't just an auditor, Emma. Before he worked for the city, he was the chief structural engineer who oversaw the installation of the underground water infrastructure for Lake Forest in the 1970s."
Emma gasped. "The storm tunnels?"
"The original storm drainage system runs directly beneath Vance's private wine cellar and ballroom," Vincent revealed, a cold, predatory smile touching his lips for the first time in days. "Vance renovated the estate twenty years ago, but he never updated the subterranean municipal foundations. He thinks his walls keep the world out. He doesn't know that the ground beneath his feet is hollow."
"Vincent," Emma said, taking his hand. "If we do this... how do we prove it to the world? The media is under his control. The TV channels are calling you a criminal."

Vincent tapped the ledger. "We don't send the proof to the news anchors. We broadcast it directly into the ballroom, live, to every screen in the room—and hijack the national broadcast Vance has arranged for his speech. We will expose the monster in front of his own court."
