Chapter 77 - The Morning After the Storm

Dawn broke over Lake Michigan not with fire, but with a pale, crystalline clarity. The storm had blown itself out, leaving the Chicago skyline silhouetted against a soft lavender horizon. The waters of the harbor were calm once more, though dozens of police cruisers, federal command vehicles, and hazardous material units still lined the perimeter of Pier 42.

Inside the heated mobile command unit of Moretti Industries, Emma sat wrapped in a thick wool blanket, holding a steaming mug of black coffee between her palms. Her bruises had been treated, and the color was slowly returning to her cheeks.

The door hissed open, and Vincent stepped inside. He had changed into a clean, dark charcoal suit, though he wore no tie, and the fatigue in his eyes was palpable. He sat down opposite her, resting his elbows on his knees.

"The federal prosecutor just left," Vincent said quietly. "Clara Vance has officially turned over all historical syndicate ledgers. Every corrupt judge, senator, and corporate executive tied to the Sterling network is currently being taken into custody across six states."

Emma looked out the tinted window at the shimmering city. "It’s really over, isn't it?"

Vincent looked at her for a long moment, the silence between them filled only by the low hum of the vehicle’s heater.

"The battle for the city is over," he said softly. "The Sterlings are destroyed. The syndicates are broken. But what about you, Emma?"

Emma looked down at her hands—the same hands that had carried trays at the banquet, that had braved gunfire, that had turned the iron key that saved hundreds of thousands of lives. "I don't think I can ever go back to being just a waitress at the Palmer House, Vincent."

"You were never 'just' a waitress," Vincent replied, his voice deep and steady. "You possessed more courage on your worst day than the entire elite of this city had in their lifetimes. I built an empire out of vengeance, Emma. I fought because I hated what they did to my family. But watching you... you fought because you cared about innocent people."

He reached out and gently covered her hand with his own. "I don't want you to go back. I want you at my side. Not as an assistant. Not as an employee. As the head of the Moretti Philanthropic Foundation. Clara Vance has agreed to transfer forty percent of the recovered trust funds into your custody. You will have the power to rebuild the communities the Sterlings spent fifty years destroying."

Emma felt a lump rise in her throat. She looked into Vincent’s dark, unwavering eyes and saw not the ruthless billionaire feared by the underworld, but a man who had finally found his anchor.

"Under one condition," Emma said, a gentle spark returning to her voice.

Vincent raised an eyebrow, a rare, genuine smile tugging at the corners of his lips. "Name it."

"We open a diner on the South Side. And Mrs. Higgins gets the corner booth for life."

Vincent chuckled—a warm, rich sound that seemed to banish the remaining ghosts of the long night. "Consider it done."
