Chapter 46 - the last debt

Years later, the final restitution payment was made.

Julian received confirmation.

His financial obligations were officially complete.

He stared at the document.

Then he folded it.

I expected relief.

Instead, he looked sad.

“What?”

“I thought I'd feel different.”

“You thought you'd feel free.”

“Yes.”

I looked at him.

“You can't buy freedom with a payment.”

He nodded.

“I know.”

“Then what do you need?”

He looked toward Leo.

“My son.”

Leo was standing across the room.

Julian walked toward him.

“I finished paying everything.”

Leo smiled.

“Good.”

Julian waited.

Leo hugged him.

That was the payment Julian had wanted all along.

Not because Leo erased the past.

May you like

Because he was willing to build something new.
