Chapter 16 - The Sentence

Julian received his sentence months later.
Richard received more.
The court recognized Julian's cooperation but did not erase his responsibility.
He accepted it.
When the judge asked whether he had anything to say, Julian stood.
He looked toward his wife.
Then toward Leo.
“I spent years believing losing money would be the worst thing that could happen to me.”
He paused.
“I was wrong.”
The courtroom was silent.
“The worst thing I lost was the trust of my son.”
Leo looked down.
Julian continued.
“I cannot ask my wife to forgive me.”
His wife looked at him.
“I cannot ask my son to forget.”
He took a breath.
“All I can do is accept what I did.”
The judge sentenced him.
Afterward, Julian's wife walked outside.
Leo followed.
She looked at her son.
“Are you okay?”
He nodded.
“I think so.”
She hugged him.
He rested his head against her.
Across the courthouse steps, Julian watched them.
He did not approach.
He knew better.
But Leo turned.
Their eyes met.
The boy lifted one hand.
Julian lifted his.
No words.
No promises.
Just a quiet acknowledgment.
Later that evening, his wife received a message.
It was from Julian.
Thank you for protecting Leo.
She stared at the screen.
Then typed one sentence.
Protect him yourself someday by becoming the man he thinks you can be.
She put the phone down.
For the first time, she felt no anger.
Only exhaustion.
And something close to peace.
