Chapter 37 - the gala without a secret

Another annual gala arrived.

This time, Leo was fourteen.

He stood beside me at the entrance.

“Do you remember the first one?”

“Yes.”

He smiled.

“I don't.”

I looked at him.

“You don't?”

“I remember what happened.”

He paused.

“But I don't remember being afraid.”

I understood.

The memory had lost its sharpest edge.

Inside the ballroom, Julian arrived.

He wasn't a guest of honor.

He wasn't an executive.

He simply came because Leo invited him.

The three of us stood together.

A photographer approached.

“Family photo?”

We looked at each other.

Leo smiled.

“Sure.”

The photographer raised his camera.

No one moved away.

No one pretended.

No one rewrote history.

We simply stood together.

Not the old family.

May you like

A new one.
