Chapter 39 - the decision about the house

I still owned the old family house.
For years, I couldn't decide what to do with it.
Sell it?
Keep it?
Turn it into an archive?
Then Leo asked:
“Why don't we use it for the foundation?”
I looked at him.
“What would we do there?”
“Families could stay there.”
The idea grew.
We renovated the house.
Six private rooms.
A counseling center.
A small legal office.
A kitchen.
A garden.
No photographs of our family.
No memorial to the scandal.
Just a place where people could breathe.
We called it The Hale House, after Margaret's late husband.
When it opened, Margaret stood beside me.
She cried.
I did too.
My old home had once been filled with secrets.
Now it would be filled with people being given a chance to start again.

That felt like the right ending.
