Chapter 14 - The Choice

The board voted to suspend Julian immediately.
His access to company accounts was frozen.
Richard was removed from every legal position.
The evidence was sent to investigators.
But Julian's wife did not celebrate.
She looked at him across the empty ballroom.
The guests were gone.
The chandeliers still glowed.
The candles were still burning.
Yet everything felt different.
Julian looked exhausted.
“I know you hate me.”
She shook her head.
“I don't hate you.”
He looked surprised.
“I don't have enough room left for hate.”
Julian lowered his eyes.
“What happens now?”
She held the divorce papers.
“You sign.”
He nodded.
“And the company?”
She looked toward the boardroom.
“That depends.”
“On what?”
“Whether you finally tell the truth.”
Julian swallowed.
He began speaking.
He admitted the affair.
The hotel expenses.
The company transfers.
The forged documents.
His conversations with Richard.
He admitted that he had planned to pressure his wife into surrendering her shares.
He admitted that Chloe had never been the real target.
The money was.
His wife listened silently.
When he finished, she asked:
“Why?”
Julian struggled to answer.
“Because I was afraid.”
“Of what?”
“Losing everything.”
She looked at him.
“You already had a family.”
Julian's eyes filled with regret.
“I know.”
She turned away.
At the doorway stood Leo.
He had come back with his grandmother.
He looked at his father.
“Dad?”
Julian stood.
“Yes?”
Leo hesitated.
“Are you going to jail?”
Julian looked at his son.
“I don't know.”
Leo nodded.
Then he said:
“But Mom told me something.”
“What?”
“That doing the right thing doesn't mean you don't get consequences.”
Julian closed his eyes.
He finally understood.
