Chapter 40 - the boy who no longer needed to save me

Leo graduated middle school.

He gave a speech.

I sat in the audience.

He talked about truth.

Not our family specifically.

Just truth.

“Sometimes,” he said, “people think protecting someone means hiding the truth from them.”

He paused.

“But protecting someone can also mean giving them the truth and trusting them to decide what to do with it.”

I felt tears in my eyes.

He continued.

“I learned that adults can make mistakes.”

A few people laughed.

“Big mistakes.”

More laughter.

“But I also learned that people can change.”

He looked toward me.

“And that families don't always stay the same.”

Then he smiled.

“Sometimes they become better because they stop pretending.”

The applause was loud.

I stood.

Julian stood too.

Our eyes met across the room.

Neither of us needed to say anything.

Our son had found his own voice.

That was the thing I had wanted most.

Not for him to protect me.

May you like

For him to become free enough to protect himself.
