Chapter 24 - what julian gave back

Julian had been making restitution for years.

He never complained.

He never asked me to reduce the amount.

He worked quietly.

His career was modest now.

No private office.

No executive assistant.

No expensive car waiting outside.

But he had changed in ways money couldn't measure.

One afternoon, he asked to see me.

“I found something.”

He handed me an old account statement.

I recognized the account.

It had been used during the years of the fraud.

“I thought investigators already had this.”

“They had the corporate records.”

He tapped the page.

“This was personal.”

I looked at him.

“What did you use it for?”

He lowered his eyes.

“Bonuses.”

I stared at him.

“Richard paid me through this account.”

“How much?”

He told me.

I felt sick.

“You never reported this?”

“I should have.”

“Why didn't you?”

“Because I was afraid.”

I closed my eyes.

Years earlier, that answer would have made me furious.

Now I heard something different.

Not an excuse.

An admission.

“What are you going to do?”

“I want to return it.”

“That money is already part of the restitution agreement.”

“I know.”

“Then why?”

He looked at me.

“Because I know where it came from now.”

I studied him.

“This isn't about making yourself feel better.”

“I know.”

“It won't erase what you did.”

“I know.”

“Leo doesn't need to hear about it.”

Julian nodded.

“I know.”

He stood.

“I just don't want to keep anything that was bought with a lie.”

After he left, I sat alone for a long time.

That was the first time I understood something.

Change wasn't a speech.

It wasn't an apology.

It wasn't a courtroom sentence.

May you like

Sometimes it was simply the decision to give something back when nobody was forcing you to.
