Chapter 38 - chloe came back
Chloe returned to the city unexpectedly.
She contacted me.
She wanted to apologize.
I agreed to meet her.
We sat in a quiet café.
She looked older.
Tired.
“I was wrong,” she said.
I nodded.
“Yes.”
She swallowed.
“I believed Julian's story because I wanted to believe it.”
“That doesn't excuse what happened.”
“I know.”
She looked down.
“I thought you hated me.”
“I didn't.”
“Why?”
“Because you weren't the person who broke my marriage.”
She looked surprised.
“But I helped.”
“Yes.”
She nodded.
“I've spent years thinking about that.”
I didn't tell her what to feel.
I simply listened.
Before she left, she said:
“I hope you're happy.”
“I am.”
She smiled.
“Good.”
That was all.
No dramatic forgiveness.
No friendship.
