Chapter 10 - The Man at the Door

Daniel Voss did not enter immediately.

He stood beneath the ballroom doors.

Older.

Calm.

Wearing a black suit.

His eyes moved from Julian to Leo.

Then to the documents.

Finally, he looked at Julian’s wife.

“I think you deserve the truth.”

Julian stepped forward.

“Daniel, leave.”

Daniel smiled faintly.

“You said that seven years ago.”

Julian stopped.

The room seemed to shrink around them.

Daniel walked toward the table.

“I worked with Richard.”

His wife asked:

“And Julian?”

Daniel looked at him.

“Julian knew enough.”

Julian shook his head.

“I didn't know everything.”

Daniel nodded.

“That may be true.”

Then he looked toward the phone.

“But you knew enough to stay quiet.”

Julian said nothing.

Daniel placed a small envelope on the table.

“This is why I came.”

His wife opened it.

Inside was a handwritten letter.

Her father’s handwriting.

Her hands trembled.

The letter was dated eight years earlier.

It said:

If Julian ever asks you to sign away your shares, do not trust him.

She looked at Julian.

He stared at the floor.

Her father had known.

Before the affair.

Before the divorce.

Before the forged signature.

He had warned her.

The letter continued.

The company is not what Julian says it is. Protect yourself. Protect Leo.

She looked toward her son.

Leo was reading over her shoulder.

He looked confused.

“Grandpa knew?”

“Yes.”

Julian finally spoke.

“He suspected.”

Her wife looked at him.

“You knew about this letter?”

“No.”

Daniel corrected him.

“Yes, he did.”

Julian turned sharply.

Daniel continued.

“Your father-in-law confronted you once.”

Julian’s face tightened.

“What did he say?”

“He said if anything happened to his daughter, he would expose everything.”

Julian lowered his head.

Her wife whispered:

“And then he died.”

Daniel nodded.

Silence.

The implication was unbearable.

But Daniel immediately added:

“Your father-in-law's death was natural.”

Her wife closed her eyes in relief.

Then Daniel looked toward Julian.

“But the records he left behind were not.”
